BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern field hockey team captured its seventh America East championship on Sunday with a 4-1 victory over the University of Delaware.

Senior Kelly Williams (Shoreham, NY) was named America East Championship Most Valuable Player. She scored the game-winning goal in NU’s first round victory over Maine and had an assist on the game-winning goal in the championship game. Junior Sarah Broderick (Harwich, MA) had a great tournament as well, with a goal and an assist versus Maine, and a goal and two assists against Delaware.

With the win, NU earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. It will be the Huskies’ 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The third-seed Fightin’ Blue Hens got on the board first. After a defensive struggle with very few offensive chances through most of the first half, Delaware’s Kim Wagaman finally broke through with an unassisted goal at 9:41 of the first half. But the Huskies answered right back, just 35 seconds later. Junior Fior Arrindell (Oakville, CT) spotted an open Mari Creatini (Auburndale, MA) at the right of the Delaware net, and Dixon deposited the game-tying goal. The Huskies took the lead for good at 5:30 of the first half. Williams took a pass off a penalty corner and got the ball to Broderick in front. The junior moved around a Delaware defender and scored the go-ahead goal.

Sophomore Sara Webber (South Dennis, MA) scored the Huskies final two goals in the second half, both off assists from Broderick on very similar plays. At 28:06 of the second, Broderick had the ball inside the circle and spotted Webber open to the left of the Delaware net. Webber took the pass and easily scored the goal. The fourth goal was almost an instant replay, coming with just 4:16 left in the game and sealing the victory for the Huskies.

NU has now won seven of 12 America East Championships. The Huskies’ last title came in 1997. Of the 12 America East championship games, NU has played in 11 of them. Williams, Webber, Broderick and Arrindell were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

Junior Emily Roy (Winslow, ME) picked up the win in net for NU, making six saves including a number of important stops in the second half. Heidi Hibshman made three saves for the Blue Hens.

With the win, Northeastern now has a 16-6 record on the season. NU went 9-0 during the regular season in conference play. Delaware finishes the season with a 13-9 record.
