The Northeastern field hockey team scored the first goal of the game but then saw the Penn State Nittany Lions score five unanswered goals in the Huskies' 5-1 loss on Saturday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. The loss was the first blemish on the team's record in 2006.
The Huskies began the scoring only 4:12 into the game, as senior co-captain Sarah Eckhoff scored her second goal in two games. She was assisted on the goal by fellow senior co-captain Whitney Shean and classmate Natalie Singelais.
Unfortunately for the Huskies, that was all the offense the team would generate for the remainder of the afternoon. Penn State's Mallory Weisen evened the score at the 20:53 mark to tie the game, and teammate Allison Scola scored the game-winning tally under four minutes later. In all, five different PSU players scored goals on the afternoon.
The Nittany Lions out-shot the Huskies by a 19-7 margin, forcing sophomore goaltender Colleen Duffy to make nine saves. Penn State's Jen Beaumont made two saves to earn the victory.
After suffering their first loss of the season, the Huskies will continue their three-game road trip on Wednesday when the team travels across town to face off with Boston College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
