In 2006, it seems as if the NU field hockey team simply cannot find a way to build any sort of momentum. Coming off an overtime win Wednesday over Brown, the team dropped its match against CAA rival Hofstra, 2-1, on Friday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.
Hofstra scored twice in the first 17 minutes of play to give the team a two-goal advantage that it would not relinquish. Charlia Warner got the Pride on the board with an unassisted tally at the 6:25 mark of the first half, and teammate Brit Blankmeyer scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal less than 10 minutes later.
Senior co-captain Whitney Shean attempted to get the Huskies back into the game, taking a pass from junior assistant captain Ashley Webber and putting it past Hofstra goaltender Jessica Cowperthwait for NU's first goal. Unfortunately for the Huskies, it would be the team's only tally of the game, as the team found a dearth of quality scoring opporunities.
Once again, the Huskies fell victim to a lack of shots. Hofstra outshot Northeastern by a 15-6 margin, and the Pride had taken seven shots and scored both goals before Shean took NU's first shot of the game, which sailed wide. For Hofstra, Cowperthwait only faced two shots on net, both by Shean, and made one save. Husky junior goaltender Liz Centofanti played well once again for Northeastern, making three saves on five attempts in a losing effort.
With the loss, Northeastern falls into a hole in the race for the conference title. Now sitting at 0-2, the Huskies will play a very important home conference game on Sunday afternoon when the team faces off with the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens, who are 2-0 in league play. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Sweeney Field.
