| With the team's chances of a CAA title essentially hanging in the balance, the NU field hockey team (5-6, 1-2 CAA) played arguably its best game of the 2006 season. Neither rain nor the opposition could stop the Huskies as they defeated the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens (5-7, 2-1 CAA), 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at a very wet Sweeney Field.
The Huskies seemed to play this game with a much-needed sense of urgency, as the home team came out strong and took control of the game from the start. After a string of four penalty corners, freshman Suzanne Hazelzet scored her second goal of the season at the 3:32 mark of the first half. The goal, which came off a penalty corner, was assisted by senior co-captain Whitney Shean and classmate Joy Earley.
Northeastern continued to pressure the Fightin' Blue Hens, forcing Delaware goaltender Nikki Rhoades to make some diving stops to keep her team in the game. Rhoades could only do so much, however, as the Huskies doubled their advantage to two goals thanks to junior assistant captain Ashley Webber, who notched her second goal of the season by deflecting a shot by junior Stephanie Casper into the top corner of the net.
In the opening half, NU outshot the Fightin' Blue Hens by a 16-1 margin and had seven more penalty corners than the visitors. As a result, Rhoades had to make eight saves while her counterpart, Northeastern junior Liz Centofanti, did not face a shot on goal.
The second half brought more of the same for the determined Huskies. The combination of Hazelzet, Shean and Earley struck again in the 52nd minute, with Hazelzet again getting the goal off a penalty corner.
Just a few minutes later, NU added a pair of insurance goals to put the game away. First, Shean tallied her third goal in three games, tipping in a pass from fellow senior co-captain Sarah Eckhoff at the 54:53 mark. Less than two minutes later, junior Harriet Hoyer struck the final blow for Northeastern by collecting a cross from Webber and depositing it in the back of the net.
For the game, Northeastern held commanding advantages in shots (28-3) and penalty corners (17-4). The Huskies were able to control play for most of the game, constantly keeping the pressure on Rhoades and the Delaware defense by not allowing the ball out of the visitors' end for large periods of time.
Centofanti earned her third victory of the season for the Huskies, after being called upon to make only one save. Rhoades played well for the Fightin' Blue Hens, making 13 saves, but it wasn't nearly enough against the determined Husky squad.
Northeastern will attempt to build upon its most complete game of the season on Wednesday, when the team travels to Cambridge to take on Harvard. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
