| In a game the team needed to win to keep its playoff hopes alive, sophomore Ashley Bascetta scored her eighth goal of the season in the 55th minute to give the Northeastern field hockey team a 1-0 victory over William & Mary at Busch Field in Williamsburg, Va. on Sunday afternoon.
Northeastern came out strong in the first half, forcing Tribe goalkeeper Gwen Hunter to make some tough saves. William & Mary attempted to dictate pace for most of the opening 35 minutes, however, as NU junior goaltender Liz Centofanti needed to make some excellent saves to keep the game scoreless, including one shot where Centofanti slipped out of position but recovered in time to make the save.
The Huskies caught a break in the 48th minute, when the home team had a goal disallowed. After the Tribe's Kim Hedley crossed a ball through the crease, teammate Gina Cimarelli directed the ball into the cage with her foot, nullifying the tally.
After that point, however, Northeastern began to take control. The team took four penalty corners in a 2:26 span, with the fourth one finally resulting in a Husky goal. On the game-winning play, Bascetta gathered the rebound of senior co-captain Sarah Eckhoff's original shot and burried it past Hunter. The tally tied Bascetta with junior Stephanie Casper for the team lead with eight. For William & Mary, the team would attempt no more shots on goal after Cimarelli's tally was disallowed.
The Huskies held a 14-2 shot advantage and also took nine more penalty corners than the Tribe, as the team took control of the game towards the end of the second half. Centofanti made two saves for the Huskies in earning her fourth career shutout and fourth of the season. Hunter made eight saves in the loss for William & Mary.
With the victory, the Huskies up their record to 8-10 overall, but more importantly get back to .500 (3-3) in conference play. The Tribe, meanwhile, fell to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in CAA play.
Having concluded its season-long five-game road trip with a well-earned victory, the Huskies will finally return home to Sweeney Field next weekend for the final two games of the regular season on Oct. 27 and 29. The weekend begins on Friday afternoon when the team faces Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m. at Sweeney Field.
