Northeastern lost 2-1 to the Hofstra Pride Sunday at Sweeney Field. The loss drops NU to 7-11 on the season, and 1-5 in the CAA.
Both teams played strong in the midfield, and neither side allowed many early scoring opportunities. Northeastern did not see quality looks at the goal until the 22-minute mark in the first half, when a Jillian Wilkes corner was sent wide. Shortly after, Pam Aldridge carried the ball from the midfield past several Hofstra defenders and into the shooting circle, but her shot was forced wide by onrushing Hofstra goalkeeper Amanda Heyde.
Hofstra struck first against the run of play at 19:26, when Genna Kovar beat NU goalkeeper Colleen Duffy from the left side. The Huskies' best chance to equalize did not come until the five-minute mark int he first half, when Ashley Bascetta shot off a corner, but her effort was wide of the net.
The Huskies could not generate much offense early in the second period, and surrendered a second goal with 24:19 left in the second half to Hofstra's Charlia Warner.
Northeastern struggled to establish sustained posession in the second half, and could not generate many good scoring opportunities. The Huskies increased the offensive pressure with ten minutes left in the game, and saw some good results. Annie Clayman got a point-blank shot off from a wide angle on the right side, but Heyde made the save. Bascetta fired another quality shot on net off an NU corner, which was also saved by Heyde. The Huskies were able to keep the ball int he circle for several minutes, and earned a series of corners. Pam Aldridge sent a hard shot in on target directly off a corner at the 4:00 mark, but Heyde was in position to make the stop. An NU corner at 3:00 sent the ball in to Bascetta, who drew the defense towards her before dishing the ball off to Aldridge on the left side of the circle. With space to shoot, Aldridge beat Heyde to draw within one.
The Huskies had little time on the clock after Aldridge's strike, and Hofstra pinned the ball in the NU zone, and held posession to wind down the clock.
Head Coach Cheryl Murtagh noted that the lack of offense was partially due to poor execution of the team's game plan. "Our objective coming out of half was to go to goal, and send the ball towards goal, and we didn't do that - we came out with short passing, which Hofstra jumped all over. You have to give them credit." On the series of penalty corners in the second half, she noted that "that's our bread and butter. We do them all the time in practice, we just need to do them better in games."
The Huskies close out their regular season schedule with two games on the road. They play at James Madison Oct. 31, and at Virginia Commonwealth Nov. 2.
