Northeastern earned a 3-0 victory over Northwestern in the team's season opener at Sweeney Field Saturday. Pam Aldridge led the way with a goal and an assist, and Carolyn Malloy and Katie Ruth also scored. Colleen Duffy opened the season with a seven-save shutout.
Northeastern controlled the ball and the tempo for much of the first half. Northwestern was able to generate some scoring opportunities against the run of play, but they yielded no scoring.
Northeastern won a series of penalty corners, and on the third, Anne-Reike Stuhlmann was able to set up an open shot for Aldridge, who fired in the game-winning goal. Malloy, Kaela Barker, and Ashley Bascetta generated most of the opportunities for the Huskies in the first half, but could not find the net. Duffy made saves on three Northwestern shots to keep the Wildcats off the board.
Barker continued to help generate offense in the second half, providing the assist on Malloy's goal early in the period with some nice passing inside the circle. Jillian Wilkes made a strong defensive play inside the Northeastern circle, robbing the ball from a Northwestern attacker, shielding it, and sending it out of danger to preserve Northeastern's margin.
Ruth tallied the Huskies' third goal with some deft stick-work in the goal-mouth, deflecting a shot from Pam Aldridge past the Northwestern goalie.
The Huskies are back in action at Sweeney Field Thursday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. when they take on Providence.
