The Huskies suffered a 2-0 loss to Providence Thursday at Sweeney Field
The first half saw scattered offensive opportunities at each end, but play took place predominantly in the midfield, with neither team able to establish sustained posession in their attacking zone.
Jillian Wilkes made a key defensive play with 7:30 remaining in the half, shutting down a Providence fast break by stealing the ball from an onrushing Friar forward.
Providence opened the second half with two quick goals, the first from Ashlyn Hudson. Hudson coralled the ball near midfield, carried it all the way to the NU goalmouth, and fired a shot at the NU cage. Northeastern's Colleen Duffy made the initial save, but Hudson put away the rebound for the first goal of the game.
Less than three minutes later, the Friars struck again when Jaime Lipski redirected a shot from Hudson past Duffy for Providence's second goal.
The Huskies got on the board in the 66th minute when a pass from Ashley Bascetta found Carolyn Malloy inside the circle. Malloy made a move to her left and delivered a backhand shot to the upper left corner. The goal was Malloy's second of the season, and her second in two games.
Northeastern almost found the equalizer minutes later. Malloy corralled the ball close to the Friar goal on the right end line. She shot from a wide angle, but the attempt missed the goal.
"I was somewhat disappointed at our part," head coach Cheryl Murtagh said after the game. "They really came out here and earned it. We saw what we could do in the last five minutes, I just wish we could have adjusted quicker."
The Huskies next game is against Massachusetts on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. at Sweeney Field. The game will have live web video on GoNU.TV.
