The Huskies suffered their second straight loss Sunday at Sweeney Field when they fell to the UMass Minutewomen, 2-1.
Northeastern dominated play early in the first half, sustaining posession in the UMass end. This possession was ultimately rewarded with a goal when sophomore forward Meg Sweeney's shot caromed off Massachusetts goaltender Alesha Widdal, towards freshman Annie Clayman. Clayman buried the rebound to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead. The goal was Clayman's first collegiate score.
Midway through the first half, Massachusetts created a two-on-one fast break in Northeastern's end, and managed an uncontested shot on goal, but Northeastern goaltender Colleen Duffy made the save to keep Massachusetts off the board.
Katie Kelly got the equalizer for UMass in the final minute of the first half, off a pass from Erin Parker, and the two teams entered the locker room tied 1-1.
Massachusetts got another goal from Kelly with ten minutes left in the game to go up 2-1.
Northeastern had an opportunity to tie the game at two when the Huskies were awarded a penalty stroke with 2:28 remaining in the game, but Ashley Bascetta's shot went wide, and the Minutewomen held on for the 2-1 win.
"I thought our team played well, we just made a few mistakes that hurt us," HEad Coach Cheryl Murtagh commented after the game. "Both [Massachusetts] goals were mental mistakes by us, and we need to do a better job finishing games. Missing the penalty is tough for [Bascetta] but she'll learn, and she'll get the next one. But overall we played good hockey, made good passes and good shots."
The Huskies travel to Hanover, N.H. to play Dartmouth Weds., Sept 10, and return to Sweeney Field Fri., Sept 12 to host Quinnipiac.
