Northeastern dropped its first conference game of the season with a 2-1 loss to William & Mary Friday.
The game was played in heavy rain and significant wind, which head coach Cheryl Murtagh noted played a part in the defeat. "We have to get started," Murtagh commented after the game. "You have to give the credit to [William & Mary] -- the rain didn't seem to effect them."
The Tribe came out of the gates strong, and got on the board 6:47 into the game, on a long-range shot from Wesley Drew. The shot caromed off an NU defender's stick and found the back of the cage.
Northeastern struggled to string together passes or sustain posession in their offensive end, and entered the locker room down 1-0 at halftime.
William & Mary struck again early in the second period, when Lauren Giles got ahold of a loose ball on the right post. A quick shot beat goalkeeper Colleen Duffy, and gave the Tribe a 2-0 lead.
Carolyn Malloy gave the Huskies life midway through the second half with her 5th goal of the season, which narrowed the gap to 2-1. Malloy carried the ball from midfield into the circle, but a shot on net, which was saved by Tribe goalie Carrie Thompson, and got ahold of the rebound, which she converted for the goal.
Northeastern appeared to have found the equalizer off a penalty corner, but Ashley Bascetta's shot called back for being too high. After Bascetta's try, the Huskies were able to generate only a few more penalty corners and offensive posessions, and William & Mary was able to possess the ball and run out the clock to secure the 2-1 win.
The Huskies drop to 5-3 (0-1 CAA) with the loss, but have another opportunity to claim their first conference win of the season when Old Dominion comes to Sweeney Field Sunday at 2 p.m.
