Huskies come up empty against Stanford

The Northeastern University field hockey team came up short Friday
night against Stanford, falling to the Cardinal at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf by a 1-0
final. Stanford junior Jaimee Erickson scored the deciding goal midway
through the first half, providing all the offense the stout Cardinal
defense would need for the win.
Husky keeper Lizzie Priest was tested early and often as the Cardinal put immediate pressure on the Northeastern goal. Stanford attempted six shots in the first 16 minutes and Priest did well to deny Stephanie Byrne twice and Xanthe Travlos once to keep the Cardinal off the scoreboard.
Travlos eventually did break down the resilient Husky defense in the 23rd minute as she found Erickson open in close for the game's only goal.
The Huskies responded well after falling behind as they peppered the Stanford cage at the end of the first half, but Cardinal keeper Alessandra Moss was up to the task. The sophomore stopped Pam Aldridge's attempt in the wake of a Husky penalty corner and was able to thwart Anne-Rieke Stuhlmann and Kaela Barker minutes later to preserve the shutout.
Priest continued her strong effort in the second half as she robbed Stanford freshman Becky Dru on a penalty stroke with a diving save to her right.
The Husky attack produced one final flurry with just over ten minutes remaining but Moss turned aside Nicola Graham and Annie Clayman's bids to equalize.
Northeastern wraps up its west coast swing at California on Sunday at 4 p.m., Eastern.
