Sophomore Kaela Barker's goal with 23 seconds remaining in regulation propelled the Northeastern Huskies to a 3-2 road victory over Providence on Wednesday evening. Freshman Nicola Graham and junior Pam Aldridge also scored for the Huskies, who have won four straight to improve their record to 4-2 in 2009.
For the second consecutive game, Aldridge orchestrated the late-game heroics. Off a penalty corner in the waning moments, the junior found an open Barker, who fired the ball past Providence keeper Rachel Chamberlain with only 23 seconds showing on the clock.
Barker's goal marked the
fourth consecutive game that she has registered at least a point; the
Huskies are now 4-0 when Barker figures on the scoresheet.
Northeastern never trailed in the contest and held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 courtesy of Graham and Aldridge.
Graham put the Huskies on the board first with just one second remaining in the first half. Fellow freshman Crystal Poland crossed the ball into the arc from the right side and Graham deflected it into the cage to beat the first half buzzer and give NU the lead at the break.
The Friars came out fast in the second half and tied the score five and a half minutes into the frame. Freshman Nicole Fernandez dribbled toward the net along the left baseline and found senior Nellie Poulin in front for her sixth tally of the season.
Aldridge grabbed the lead back for NU three minutes later off a feed from Barker as a result of a penalty corner. It was Aldridge's third straight game with a goal.
Once again the Huskies could not hold the lead, however, as Friars' junior Ashlyn Hudson potted an unassisted goal at the 51:24 mark.
Barker then stunned the crowd at the Friar Field Hockey Complex with the late strike, her second goal of the season.
Husky keeper Lizzie Priest made four saves in the victory, including three in the second half to keep NU in the game.
The red-hot Huskies continue their road trip on Saturday, Sept. 16 at No. 11 Massachusetts at 2 p.m.
