Freshman Crystal Poland scored two goals, and sophomore Carolyn Malloy
added another as the Northeastern Huskies squeaked by New Hampshire on
Alumnae Day Sunday at Sweeney Field. The Huskies have now won three
straight games to improve their record to 7-4 in 2009.
Poland put the Huskies ahead after 10 minutes when she flicked a shot from the top of the circle past UNH keeper Katherine Nagengast. Malloy inserted the ball off a penalty corner and junior Anne-Rieke Stuhlmann set up Poland with a textbook stick-stop.
The Wildcats' leading scorer, Whitney Shea, evened the scoreline at the 25:25 mark of the first half as she redirected a pass from Whitney Frates into the Husky net. It was Shea's 13th goal of the season.
Tied at one entering the second half, the Huskies wasted little time taking the lead back. Malloy cracked a turnaround shot from the left of the UNH cage that found its way past Nagengast for the go-ahead goal at 38:43.
Poland produced an insurance tally 10 minutes later, when she tapped home an Annie Clayman centering pass from the right wing. It was Poland's seventh goal in her last three games.
The Wildcats did not go quietly. Frates capitalized on a loose ball in the wake of a penalty corner to cut the deficit to one with 16 minutes remaining. Husky keeper Lizzie Priest then did well to deny Cally Cooke and Kara Connolly with two game-saving kick saves.
Northeastern outshot New Hampshire by a 13-11 margin, including a 9-5 mark in the first half.
The Huskies return to the field on Friday, Oct. 9 against Towson at Sweeney Field at 2 p.m.
