No. 7 Connecticut too much for Huskies

Team 1st 2nd Final
No. 7 Connecticut (14-1, 3-0 Big East) 1 4 5
Northeastern (9-5, 3-1 CAA) 0 0 0

Senior Loren Sherer and sophomore Cara Silverman combined for nine points as the No. 7 Connecticut Huskies (14-1, 3-1 Big East) defeated Northeastern (9-5, 3-1 CAA) by a 5-0 count at the Newton Campus Sports Complex Wednesday night. Husky keeper Lizzie Priest made eight saves in the defeat.

Connecticut held the lion's share of the possession in both halves, producing 20 shots (13 on goal) and numerous scoring chances from the outset. The nation's leading scorer, Sherer put UConn ahead at the 23:32 mark of the first half with her 22nd goal of the season. Sophomore Ali Blankmeyer provided the assist with a cross that found its way onto the stick of Sherer in front for the easy tap in.

Blankmeyer came close to doubling the lead only two minutes later, but was denied on a breakaway by the blocker of Priest. The Northeastern keeper then made a big kick save on Sherer's blast from 12 yards out to deny the sniper her second of the game.

Despite being outchanced by an aggressive UConn squad, the Huskies found themselves down only one goal at the half and within striking distance of pulling even. The second frame, however, proved to be a bitter pill to swallow.

Sherer scored 3:42 out of the gate to double Connecticut's lead on a breakaway. Silverman took over from there, scoring twice in a span of 1:19 to blow the game open, making it 4-0 with 23 minutes remaining. Junior Melissa Gonzalez added a fifth in the 63rd minute, jumping on a loose ball just inside the arc, and firing it home.

Northeastern sophomore Keelin Quinn made a superb play along the goalline to prevent another UConn goal late in the game. Quinn dove toward the right post and made a defensive save to deny sophomore Kim Kryzk's bid from a sharp angle.

Connecticut outshot Northeastern 20-4 and did not allow a shot on goal in the second half.

The Huskies are back in action on Friday afternoon against No. 9 Boston College at Sweeney Field at 2 p.m.
