The Northeastern University women's field hockey team lost a tough one Saturday morning in a scrimmage against defending national champion Maryland. After an evenly-matched 70 minutes of regulation, the Terrapins wasted only 54 seconds in the extra session to score the game's only goal.
In the seven on seven overtime format, senior Ameliet Rischen jumped on a loose ball in the Northeastern end and found Nicole Muracco open in front of the goal. Muracco slid the ball past Husky goalkeeper Lizzie Priest from eight yards out, just inside the left post for the deciding goal in the scrimmage.
The Huskies had several chances to win the game in regulation, but were stifled by the stout Maryland defense and the goalkeeper tandem of Melissa Vassalotti and Alicia Grater. Four minutes into the contest, Northeastern's Crystal Poland produced a scoring chance off a set up from Pamela Aldridge, but her shot skipped just wide of the cage.
Just over 10 minutes later, Grater made two stops against Kaela Barker and Carolyn Malloy off a penalty corner to preserve the tie.
Priest was busy five minutes into the second half, as she denied Maryland's Kirstie Dennig twice on a scramble in front of the net.
The Huskies outshot the Terrapins by a 10-9 margin, including four attemps from Aldridge.
The Terrapins were without the services of two-time first team All-American Katie O'Donnell and seniors Brianna Davies and Alexis Pappas, who are currently representing the United States at the 2009 Junior World Cup.
Northeastern returns to action on Aug. 28, when the team hosts Syracuse in the regular season opener at Sweeney Field.
