Suzanne Hazelzet was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year.
On Friday four members of the Northeastern field hockey team were chosen as the recipients of the annual Colonial Athletic Association awards, as selected by the league's coaches. Receiving the top honor was sophomore Suzanne Hazelzet, who was named CAA Defensive Player of the Year. Ashley Bascetta and Ashley Webber were both named to the All-CAA second team, while freshman Meg Sweeney was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. The awards were given out at the annual CAA Championship Banquet.

Hazelzet is the first Northeastern player to ever win the Defensive Player of the Year award. The Rotterdam, Netherlands native has started in all 20 games for the Huskies this season and has been a steady presence for Northeastern’s back line. Earlier in the season, Hazelzet scored goals in back-to-back games against Delaware and Towson and registered a seven-point game at Hofstra on Oct. 21, scoring a hat trick and adding an assist. She was honored of CAA Player of the Week on Oct. 22 for her performance. On Thursday Hazelzet recorded two assists in Northeastern’s 3-2 win over Towson University in the CAA Quarterfinals. She is tied for the team-lead with 13 points and has also been named to the All-CAA First Team.

Bascetta, a midfielder from Granby, Conn., has had a huge week for the Northeastern field hockey team, as she scored the game-winning goal against Virginia Commonwealth University in a 1-0, overtime win that earned the Huskies a berth to the CAA Tournament. In Thursday night’s CAA Quarterfinal, Bascetta scored two goals and assisted on the game-winner in Northeastern’s 3-2 win over Towson University, sending the team to the semifinals. Bascetta has started in all 20 games for Northeastern as an assistant captain, and currently leads the team with six goals and one assist for 13 points. She has also taken a team-leading 47 shots. In her career at Northeastern, Bascetta has totaled 15 goals and three assists for 33 points. She has started in every game of her collegiate career at NU.

South Dennis, Mass., native Webber has appeared in all 20 of Northeastern’s games as a tri-captain, leading the team with five assists and registering three goals for 11 total points. In her career at NU, Webber has amassed 24 goals, 16 assists, and 64 points, and has earned such accolades as NFHCA Div. I All-America second team and All-Region first team. As a rookie she was named to the America East All-Rookie Team. Webber was named to the Preseason All-CAA team before the start of the 2007 season.

Sweeney, a forward from Walpole, Mass., has played in 18 games for Northeastern, starting in seven, and has three goals for six points on the season. On Oct. 21, Sweeney registered a two-goal game at Hofstra in a 7-1 Northeastern victory.
