Huskies hold spring game
April 4, 2009
Boston, Mass.

Alex Dulski starred in the football team's spring game.

The Northeastern football team ended spring practice with its annual scrimmage in front of family and fans at Parsons Field.

The Huskies opened the day with a 7-on-7 drill that featured a nice connection between quarterback Alex Dulski and wide reciever Jesse Sparks for a 40-yard pass. Sparks made a diving catch down the sideline.

The team then followed with a scrimmage that saw two offensive teams go up against two defensive teams. The drives lasted until the offense scored, lost the ball on downs or blown dead by head coach Rocky Hager.

Highlights on the offense included a pair of long quarterback scrambles by redshirt freshman Matt Carroll, including one that resulted in a touchdown. Redshirt freshman T.J. Strunk also had a strong day running the ball. He had a 17-yard touchdown run.

Sophomore Elijah Harris, converting from defensive back to running back, made an impact with a 78-yard kickoff return and an eight-yard touchdown run. Towards the end of the scrimmage, senior Ty Sibert had a 15-yard touchdown catch after grabbing an option shovel pass from Dulski at the line of scrimmage.

On defense, the Huskies were led by senior Phil Higgins, who intercepted a Dulski pass. Recording sacks for NU were junior Nate Thellen and senior Craig Kenney. Senior Woody Romelus also had a nice tackle, snuffing out a reverse and taking down Sparks for a big loss in the backfield.

During the scrimmage, play was stopped periodically to hand out awards from the 2008 season. Alex Broomfield was named the offensive MVP while Phil Higgins was named defensive MVP and Dan Elwood was selected as the special teams MVP. John Sperrazza won the Zabilski Award as the most dedicated player while Brian Mandeville picked up the Chicken Lou's Award for his heart and attitude. Mike Laperriere was named Rookie of the Year. Greg Abelli was named most improved offensive player, and Higgins was named most improved defensive player. Corey Thomas earned the Chris Midgett Award as the team's best lineman. Tyler Perkins was given the Ironman Award for his efforts in the weight room.

The team also honored all 13 of its outgoing seniors, including Broomfield, Higgins, Mandeville, Sperrazza, Perkins, Thomas, Anthony Orio, Chris Plum, Rob Theoudele, Cord Parks, Cornelius Bunch, Mark Washington and Art Dias.

The 2009 Huskies will next take on summer/fall camp, which will begin August 9. Northeastern opens the regular season on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Boston College. The team's home opener will be the following Saturday, Sept. 12, against Maine.
