Junior John Griffin and freshman Kyle Hunte were honored by CAA Football for their efforts in Northeastern's 27-7 win over Towson last Saturday. Griffin was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week, and Hunte was named Rookie of the Week.
Griffin, who earns his first-ever CAA Football weekly honor, carried the ball 29 times for a career-high 200 yards. He had a 70-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that put the Huskies up 21-0. It was Griffin's longest run of his career. He racked up 166 rushing yards in the first half alone, a new Huskies first-half record. Griffin also had a 53-yard dash, now accounting for the top two runs on the season for Northeastern. The Westminster, Mass., native now has 525 yards on the season and 733 for his career.
Hunte, who played in just his third collegiate game this past week, helped keep Towson off the board with a couple of critical plays. In the first quarter, he ran a blitz on Tigers quarterback Tommy Chroniger, who then had to rush off a screen pass, but Chroniger, threw it right to nose guard Mike Lukenda, who intercepted the ball and took it back 20 yards for a touchdown. Hunte, who hails from Brookline, Mass., then had an impact play in the second quarter. On 2nd-and-goal from the NU 10, Hunte sacked quarterback Jeremy Jayne for a 14-yard loss. Towson had to settle for a field goal attempt and missed a 41-yarder. The 14-yard sack was NU's largest tackle for a loss on the season. In three games, Hunte has 14 tackles, a sack and an interception.
Hunte is the first Huskies freshman to earn conference Rookie of the Week honors since Mat Johnson on Oct. 7, 2006.
Griffin, Hunte and the rest of the Huskies look to build on their victory next Saturday when they travel to Durham, N.H., to face New Hampshire at Cowell Stadium at 12 p.m.
