After McKanas cut the JMU edge to 30-27 with 4:24 left, the Huskies forced the Dukes to punt on their next possession. NU took over at its own 37 with only 2:19 showing. Browne, who made his first start of the season, completed a 39-yard pass to Delgado on first down, setting up the Huskies at the JMU 24. Browne then connected with Dave Klemic on an 11-yard play to the 13. A sack back to the 17 set the stage for the game-winning play from Browne to Delgado. Entering the game, Delgado had totaled only 16 catches and 238 yards in nearly three seasons with the Huskies. He finished the day with five grabs for 118 yards.
After Delgado gave NU the lead, T.J. Hill sealed the win by picking off his conference-leading eighth pass of the season to end JMU's final drive. The Huskies then ran out the clock.
The Huskies, in danger of losing all their Atlantic 10 games for the first season ever, won the season finale for the second straight year. Fourteen NU seniors finished their careers. NU compiled a mark of 19-25 in their four seasons.
Senior Dave Klemic finished the season with 65 catches to tie his career high but fall three short of Dan Ross's team record of 68 set in 1978. Klemic reset all the rest of Ross's receiving marks. He finished his career with 3419 receiving yards, over 1000 more than the previous standard of 2343 held by Ross. Klemic also had 42 career touchdowns and 217 receptions, obliterating the old record. He couldn't overtake the NU record for all-purpose yards, however, finishing with 4232, just 43 yards shy of Bill LaFreniere's 4275 from 1978-81.
Though Klemic will graduate, the Huskies have the bulk of their key players returning in 2001, including McKanas and 1999's top rusher Tim Gale. Also back will be standout receiver Andy Alsup and Delgado, along with QBs Browne and Logan Galli, who started the first 10 games of 2000. The young defense returns nearly all its key components, including top tackler Joe Gazzola and Hill, one of the league's most dynamic defensive backs.
NU doubled its 1999 win total with four victories in 2000, the first year of head coach Don Brown's tenure with the Huskies.
