The Huskies lost their Atlantic 10 opener 24-7 at New Hampshire. NU quarterback Logan Galli was intercepted by Czar Wiley on the Huskies’ first play from scrimmage. UNH took over at the NU 21 and three plays later scored on a 10-yard run by Imion Powell for a 7-0 lead. The ’Cats would never trail, adding another TD on a 21-yard pass from Ryan Day to Kane Anderson with 4:55 left in the first half and taking a 14-0 edge into intermission.
NU had a good chance to score late in the second quarter, driving the ball to the UNH 12. But, a procedure penalty (one of eight first-half penalties against NU) set the Huskies back to the 17. Galli was then sacked to the UNH 26 on a third down play and threw an incomplete pass on fourth down. UNH took over with just 22 seconds left in the half.
A Shawn MacLean field goal midway through the third quarter made it 17-0, but NU answered with its best possession of the day as Kem Nwosu capped a 12-play 80-yard drive with a 9-yard TD run. T.J. Hill had his first interception of the season to stop UNH on its ensuing possession and set up the Huskies at midfield. NU took it to the UNH 28 before three straight incomplete passes and another sack gave the ball back to the Wildcats.
NU had one more comeback surge. Early in the fourth quarter, Coach Brown gambled on a fourth and seven play, calling for a fake punt. Joe Gazzola ran for the first down at the UNH 47. But the momentum didn’t last as two plays later, Galli was picked off again. UNH then took the ball 58 yards in eight plays and put the game away on a 9-yard TD run by Day with 8:04 left.
The Huskies are now 1-17-1 in their last 19 visits to face UNH in Durham. The lone win came on Oct. 17, 1998 (35-28).
