 L.J. McKanas ran for a career-high 225 yards, the second-highest game total in NU history. |
L.J. McKanas led the way with a career-high 225 yards on 47 carries. It was the second-highest rushing total ever recorded by an NU player and a game record for most carries. Only Harold Scott has ever run for more yards, as he had 248 against Rhode Island on Nov. 5, 1988. Scott was the last Husky back to run for 200 when he reached the figure against Lehigh on Nov. 12, 1988. McKanas, who has been hampered by an ankle injury suffered in the season opener, obviously looked back at 100 percent in breaking the NU rushing attempts record of Gary Benoit, who had 41 against AIC on Oct. 16, 1982.
T.J. Hill had a game-breaking play early in the fourth quarter when he intercepted a pass by Ryan Tracey and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown and a 28-27 NU lead. Northeastern went for two points and McKanas was stopped. It was NU's first defensive touchdown since Hill returned an interception for a TD against Maine in the 1998 season finale. After UConn missed a 53-yard field goal on its next drive, NU took over and marched 65 yards in nine plays for a critical insurance score as Sean Connor went in from 1 yard out for his first TD of the year. Joe Connolly added the extra point for the 35-27 edge.
After going into the half down 27-15, NU scored on its first possession of the second half, on a 3-yard pass from Logan Galli to Dave Klemic. It was Klemic's second TD of the day and third Galli TD pass. In the first half, UConn took advantage of an interception and scored to extend its lead to 27-15 on a 16-yard pass from Tracey to Steve O'Connor with 1:34 left in the second quarter. It was Tracey's fourth TD pass of the first half.
UConn scored on its first drive as Tracey hit John Fitzsimmons for a TD. NU answered as Galli connected with Klemic on a 20-yard scoring play. The TD made Klemic NU's all-time leading scorer. He finished the game with 232 career points, passing kicker Brandon Hanes (1994-97) and his total of 224. Fitzsimmons caught his second touchdown pass of the day to put UConn up 13-6. Joe Connolly then made a 24-yard field goal to cut the lead to 13-9. Taber Small scored on a 56-yard TD pass from Tracey, which completed a 92-yard drive and gave UConn a 20-9 edge. NU's Jared Philcox scored on a pass from Galli to cut the lead to 20-15. Galli then rushed for the two-point conversion and came up short. Excell Walker set up the scoring drive as he stopped UConn with his first interception of the season and second of his career.
Galli finished 22-30 for 235 yards. Klemic ended with eight catches for 94 yards. NU had lost its last four games against UConn and entered the game trailing the series 4-17-1. The Huskies last defeated New England’s other Huskies in the 1995 season, 10-9 in Storrs. NU had met just one other IA foe in its history, and that came last season against Boston College when the Huskies nearly upset the Eagles, losing 33-22.
