Northeastern traveled to Delaware looking to go 4-1 for the first time since 1968, but was sent home with a 42-0 loss. The hometown Blue Hens scored on their first possession and never looked back in delighting the hometown crowd of 17,811.
Delaware running back Butter Pressey had a dominating day, rushing for 161 yards, including a touchdown. The Blue Hens had 24 first downs to NU's seven and outgained the Huskies 519-191. Northeastern got the ball first and was forced to punt after three plays. Delaware took over at its own 36 and scored on its third play from scrimmage as quarterback Matt Nagy hooked up with Jamin Elliot on a 56-yard pass play with 12:29 left in the first quarter.
After another NU punt, Kurt Abrams set up the Huskies in Blue Hen territory with his first career interception. The Huskies stalled at the Delaware 18, and after a substitution penalty, went to attempt a 41-yard field goal. An errant snap led to a botched play and the Blue Hens took over on downs. Delaware then marched for a touchdown as Pressey scored on a 2-yard run to complete a six-play, 76-yard drive that made it 14-0 with 2:44 left in the first quarter.
Penalties would again hurt the Huskies on their next series. After moving the ball to the Delaware 34, NU was flagged for three procedure infractions in five plays and ended up back near midfield. Jason Farrell eventually punted it away. Delaware moved the ball into NU territory and set up for a 39-yard field goal, which was blocked by NU co-captain Chris McEwan. The Huskies couldn't capitalize on the momentum, moving just a yard in three plays before another Farrell punt. Delaware struck again with 1:52 left in the half as Nagy hit Craig Cummings for a 32-yard scoring pass and a 21-0 Blue Hen edge at intermission.
In the second half, Delaware started the third quarter with the ball, but T.J. Hill picked off his second pass of the day to set up NU at the Blue Hen 27. The Huskies moved the ball to the Delaware 19 and had a fourth down play, but an L.J. McKanas rush came up short and Delaware took over on downs. The Blue Hens responded from the fourth-down stop with a 10-play, 82-yard drive that was finished by James O'Neal's 2-yard TD run to make it 28-0.
NU only ventured into Delaware territory once more, and that came on the Huskies' final possession.
Husky QB Logan Galli got off to a slow start, completing one of his first seven passes, and finished 12 of 32 for a season-low 97 yards. L.J. McKanas, who had a career-best 225 yards at UConn last week, was held to 41 yards on 15 carries. The game featured the return of sophomore running back Tim Gale, who sat out the last two weeks with a broken thumb. He ran for 28 yards on 11 attempts. The Hens also did a nice job on NU's receiving threats. Dave Klemic had three catches for 26 yards and Michael Mack two for 26. Andy Alsup was back in the lineup after missing the UConn game and had two grabs for 23 yards.
