From the opening kickoff, it was apparent that NU head coach Don Brown was well-prepared for his old team. It was also apparent that the Minutemen were in for a tight game after sending the Huskies home with the worst defeat in their history (77-0) last season in Amherst. Brown, who was defensive coordinator at Massachusetts the past two years, had Rocco Rinaldi reverse the opening kickoff to Andy Alsup who went 93 yards for the score. It was the Huskies’ first kickoff return for a TD since Tony Morales did it against Delaware in 1998.
The 7-0 lead would stand for the remainder of the first quarter and nearly all of the second until Joe Connolly kicked a 24-yard field goal to put NU up 10-0. The Huskies would be held scoreless until their final play of the game. The Minutemen would score just over three minutes later to cut the Husky lead to 10-7.
After a scoreless third quarter, the final frame of action proved to be crucial for the Huskies. In just the third play of the fourth quarter, NU had forced the Minutemen to kick a field goal on fourth and goal from the Northeastern five-yard line. Doug White’s 22-yard field goal was good for Massachusetts, but the Huskies were flagged for roughing the kicker, resulting in a Minuteman first down. On the very next play, UMass running back Kevin Quinlan ran it in from two yards out to give the Minutemen a 14-10 advantage.
Massachusetts would never relinquish the lead, but the Huskies had several great opportunities to get the edge back. On the Huskies’ next drive, not only did they fail to convert on fourth and 11, but NU quarterback Logan Galli was hit hard and had to leave the game to soreness in his throwing shoulder. Backup QB Adam Browne took over for Galli later in the fourth, but his pass that was intercepted with under two minutes remaining proved to be costly. Then, on a critical third and one play from midfield, UMass’s Quinlan hit the corner and never looked back as he went the distance for a 50-yard touchdown run to put the game away.
The Huskies would score as time expired on an eight-yard pass from Browne to Alsup, but it was too little too late. NU fell to 3-3 on the season and 0-3 in Atlantic 10 action, while UMass improved to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Quinlan finished the day with 241 rushing yards for the Minutemen. It was just three yards shy of the most yards ever by an opponent at Parsons Field. Mal Najarian had 244 rushing yards for Boston University in 1979. L.J. McKanas had another great day on the ground for the Huskies, running for 163 yards on 16 carries. However, he left the game in the second half with a knee injury. Standout receiver Michael Mack also was among the walking wounded after the game, having limped to the sidelines for good in the first half.
Dave Klemic extended his NU record total of 100-yard receiving games to 13 with an 11-catch, 119-yard day. He tied the school game record of 11 receptions held by David Edmundson and Desmond Bellot. Next up, the Huskies will host Villanova in their annual Homecoming game at Parsons Field on Oct. 14 at 12:30 p.m.
