Brett Gordon scored one touchdown and passed to Brian White for two others for Villanova (4-2, 2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference). Gordon completed 20 of 37 passes for 256 yards.
With the score tied at 14 midway through the fourth quarter, T.J. Hill picked off a Gordon pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. It was his second interception return for a TD of the season. Joe Connolly’s kicked was wide and NU had a 20-14 edge. The Huskies then had another golden opportunity to score as Westbrook fumbled on the Wildcats’ ensuing possession and Steve Anzalone recovered for NU at the Villanova 40. But the Huskies went seven yards in three plays and had a fourth-down-and-three-to-go situation at the ‘Nova 33. Logan Galli completed an 11-yard pass to Jared Philcox for an apparent first down, but it was called back because of NU false start. The Huskies then punted and pinned Villanova at its own 5-yard line. Penalties cost NU all afternoon as the Huskies tied a school record for most penalties in a game with 14 for 106 yards.
The Wildcats marched 95 yards in seven plays and tied the score on Westbrook’s 42-yard TD run with 1:29 left in the third quarter. The run was set up as NU’s William Griffin was flagged for pass interference on a third-and-11 play from the Villanova 43. The 15-yard penalty set up Westbrook’s TD scamper. Hill blocked the Wildcats’ extra-point attempt and the game remained tied at 20. The Huskies had a chance to break the tie as Connolly attempted a 37-yard field goal with 10:39 left to play. But, it missed wide right and Villanova took over at its own 20. The Wildcats marched 80 yards in six plays and took the lead for good as Westbrook bounced off three would-be tacklers and scored from 18 yards out. Westbrook had 67 of the 80 yards of the drive. Galli was picked off by Gary Johnson on NU’s next possession and he ran it back to the Husky 13. Four plays later, the ‘Cats scored again as Gordon hooked up with White on an 8-yard TD pass.
Northeastern jumped ahead 14-0 on Galli's 49-yard touchdown pass to Kito Delgado in the first quarter and a 26-yard scoring pass to Dave Klemic early in the second quarter. But Villanova struck back just before halftime, driving 71 yards on four plays and scoring on Gordon's 4-yard pass to White 1:04 before the break to cut the lead 14-7. Northeastern managed just one second-half touchdown, a 32-yard interception return by T.J. Hill that gave the Huskies their last lead, 20-14, midway through the third period.
Villanova had 208 second-half rushing yards, after gaining just 46 before the break. Galli finished 18-of-33 passes for a season-high 290 yards for Northeastern. Klemic had eight catches for 102 yards, extending his school-record for career 100-yard receiving games to 14. Andy Alsup also was over the century mark with five grabs for 109 yards. It was the first time since Nov. 22, 1997 that two Husky receivers had 100 yards in the same game. That was also against Villanova as David Smith (179) and Klemic did it (130).
Hill won the James Thornton Memorial Award as NU’s Homecoming day MVP. He had 12 tackles (10 unassisted), to go with the interception, blocked kick and a pass breakup.
The Huskies complete their three-game homestand by taking on Rhode Island on Saturday, Oct. 21.
