NU had a lead of 7-0 and was within three early in the second half, but a few costly mistakes led to a 45-21 loss in the season opener at Hofstra last Saturday. Kito Delgado hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Adam Browne with 13:19 left in the third quarter to cut a 17-7 Hofstra halftime edge to 17-14. But, Hofstra QB Rocky Butler (336 passing yards) led the Pride in an efficient 12-play 72-yard scoring drive that provided a 10-point bulge again, 24-14. Browne fumbled after being sacked by Robert Thomas three plays into NU’s ensuing possession and the Pride set up on the Husky 11. One minute later, Hofstra had a comfortable advantage as Tom Kemper scored on a 3-yard run for a 31-14 lead. The Pride would add another TD to complete the run of 21 unanswered points before L.J. McKanas gave NU its final points of the evening on an 8-yard run with 12:38 to play. McKanas also scored the Huskies’ first touchdown of the game, a 4-yard run that gave NU a 7-0 edge just 4:19 into the first quarter. Sophomore cornerback Rocco Rinaldi set up the score with his first career interception and subsequent 46-yard return to the Hofstra 9-yard line. McKanas ended the day with 145 yards on 19 carries, the ninth time in his career he has topped 100 yards. Delgado had 11 receptions (tying the NU game record) for 117 yards. Browne started slow, completing just one of his first five passes, but he hit on 19-37 (51.4 percent) the rest of the way to finish 20-42 for 205 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
