HARRISONBURG, VA -- Northeastern got to the .500 mark with the fourth win in its last five games, defeating James Madison 24-17 at Bridgeforth Stadium on Saturday.
JMU was down 17-10 and had the ball with 4:51 left to play, but Steve Anzalone forced a fumble by Dukes’ quarterback Matt LeZotte and T.J. Hill raced 45 yards for a critical insurance touchdown. Cody Hall returned the next kickoff 33 yards to the NU 45 and JMU scored to make the game tight again on a 6-yard pass from Mike Connelly to Alan Harrison with 53 seconds left. The Dukes tried an onside kick, but it went out of bounds and NU took over. Three Shawn Brady rushes later, the Huskies had run out the clock.
It was another great day for senior tailback L.J. McKanas, who rushed for 155 yards on 37 carries. His first-half rushing touchdown was the 12th of the year, breaking the oldest NU record – Jim Connolly’s season mark set in 1936. The Husky defense had another strong performance, forcing five JMU turnovers. NU scored 17 of its points off Duke turnovers. JMU finished with only 174 total yards and 10 first downs.
The Huskies dominated the first half, holding JMU to just two first downs and 23 total yards. NU jumped on the board first with a 27-yard field goal by freshman Colin Gaynor with 3:15 left in the first quarter. After a JMU punt NU took over at its own 25. But, on the Huskies’ third play from scrimmage, McKanas fumbled and the loose ball was picked up by JMU’s Dennard Melton and returned 25 yards for a 7-3 lead.
Rocco Rinaldi fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Dukes took over at the NU 13 poised to increase the advantage. The Huskies sniffed out a reverse and Steve Anzalone tackled Cody Hall for a seven-yard loss back to the 20. Two plays later, NU cornerback Art Smith made his conference-leading seventh interception to end the JMU threat.
The Huskies answered with a nine-play, 92-yard drive to take the lead for good as Brady found Andy Alsup on a 42-yard touchdown pass to provide a 10-3 edge after Gaynor’s point-after.
JMU had to punt on its next drive and NU took over in good field position at its own 48. The Huskies needed just seven plays to move 52 yards for another score on a 5-yard run by McKanas to make it 17-7. He had 33 yards on carries during the drive. NU took the 10-point edge into intermission.
The Huskies return to action on Nov. 24 at Rhode Island for their final game of the season. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 15.
