 The final play of the 2001 season: Shawn Brady rolled out and threw a long pass that fell incomplete in NU's heartbreaking loss. |
NU had a winning season on the line, entering the game with a 5-5 overall record and 4-4 in Atlantic 10 play. When Quintin Mitchell returned a Rhode Island punt 63 yards for a touchdown and a 12-point Husky lead, it looked as though a plus-.500 season was nearly secure.
But the Rams answered Mitchell's score less than two minutes later with a 61-yard touchdown pass from Vince Nedimyer to Salim Wellington on URI's next possession.
After a Husky punt, the Rams started the winning drive at their own 9-yard line with 4:05 showing on the clock. Nedimyer (11-16, 166 yards) completed a 15-yard pass to Luther Green to start the series. More big plays followed as a run of 17 yards by Wellington put the Rams in Husky territory and David Jamison (30 carries, 123 yards) gave URI a first down at the NU 29 with a 16-yard scamper.
The NU defense forced a fourth-and-one play, but Jamison plowed for two yards and another first down. After getting stopped for a loss on the previous play, Nedimyer rushed for eight yards to the NU 11, setting up a third-and-three play with 33 seconds left. Green moved the chains with a six-yard surge to set up first-and-goal. Nedimyer threw one incomplete pass before finding Wendall Williams on a 5-yard TD pass for the go-ahead points. Williams only had the ball briefly before NU cornerback Art Smith knocked it away, but the officials deemed it was long enough. It was a 14-play, 91-yard drive in 3:41. The Huskies had solid field position after the kickoff, starting at their own 40. But, NU only had 19 seconds to get into field goal range, and three incomplete Shawn Brady passes later, the game was over.
Up 26-21, NU got the ball with 10:38 to play. The Huskies gained three first downs, including a pair of third-down conversions. Brady ran for eight yards on third-and-seven situation, and then Andy Alsup took a reverse for five yards on a third-and-four play. L.J. McKanas picked up another first down at the URI 44 as the clock wound under five minutes left.
McKanas, who had another amazing day in his final game as a Husky (39 carries, 164 yards, 2 TDs), was stopped for a loss of one on first down, setting up a second-and-11 play. McKanas then took a pitch and attempted to throw a pass, which was nearly intercepted. Brady's pass to Michael Mack went incomplete on third down, forcing a Tyler Grogan punt to the URI 9 and setting the stage for the Rams' dramatic drive.
URI won seven straight to start the season, but fell out of NCAA playoff contention with three straight losses in November. The Huskies entered the final game of the season going in the opposite direction, having won four of their last five games.
NU had some solid chances to put the Rams away. Down 14-7, the Huskies got a 32-yard field goal from freshman Colin Gaynor with just 15 seconds left in the first half to pull within 14-10 at intermission. McKanas then carried the Huskies on their first possession of the second half, gaining 54 yards on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that he capped with a 15-yard TD run for a 17-14 NU lead. It increased his NU season-record total to 14 rushing TDs. URI then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Rocco Rinaldi recovered for the Huskies. McKanas gave it right back, however, with a fumble on the Huskies' next play.
The defense, which has been the catalyst for NU's late-season surge, provided another opportunity when Smith tipped a Nedimyer pass into the hands of free safety T.J. Hill, who returned the interception all the way to the URI 30. The Huskies marched the ball to the Ram 2-yard line and had a first-and-goal play after a pass interference call against URI. McKanas tried to punch it in, but the Huskies were hit with a holding call that sent them back to the 12. Brady attempted three passes to the endzone, but each fell incomplete. The Huskies were forced to settle for a 29-yard field goal by Gaynor, making it 20-14.
Even with the heartbreaking loss, the Huskies made significant strides in the 2001 season. After a 1-4 start, the team won four of its last six games to end with a 5-6 record. Picked to finish 11th in the Atlantic 10, NU won four conference games for just the second time ever and played for fifth place on the final day of the season.
McKanas had the greatest season ever by an NU runner, setting new season records for rushing yards (1756), attempts (342) and touchdowns (14) as well as all-purpose yards (1890). He ended his stellar career as NU's all-time leader in rushing yards (3692), over 1000 more than previous record-holder Brian Vaughan (2481).
"Of course it's a disappointing ending...6-5 was a big step for our program," NU head coach Don Brown said after the game. "But as disappointed as I am with the loss, the thing I feel the best about is that I get great effort every week. We've taken steps as a program this year. It would have been nice to finish it off for the seniors, but I can't speak enough about the effort. My guys are playing the game the way it's supposed to be played.
"What can you say about the ending? I give [Rhode Island] the credit. They made the plays during the course of that last drive to beat us. That drive doesn't bother me at all because I think they earned it."
