It was a tale of two halves for the Huskies in a 31-14 loss at Villanova. In the first 30 minutes, NU had just two first downs and 49 yards, compared to 12 first downs for 'Nova and 249 yards. All-American Brian Westbrook had two touchdowns and 172 all-purpose yards as the Wildcats built a 31-0 lead at intermission.
In the second half, however, the Huskies had more first downs (11-6) and yards (204-99) in outscoring the 'Cats 14-0. Westbrook only managed 23 more all-purpose yards in the second half.
Villanova took the first possession of the game 80 yards in nine plays, capping the drive with a Brett Gordon to Brian White 2-yard touchdown pass with 9:42 left in the first quarter. NU had to punt on its first drive and Gary Johnson sneaked through to block Tyler Grogan's kick. Villanova recovered at the Husky 8-yard line and added a 20-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead with 6:26 left in the opening quarter. The Huskies continued to sputter on offense, going three-and-out on their first three possessions.
The Westbrook highlight reel got some more footage late in the first quarter when he ran back a Grogan punt 51 yards to the NU 7. He scored from the 1-yard line on the first play of the second quarter and then busted a 34-yard TD run on the Wildcats' next drive for a comfortable 24-0 edge with 11:39 left before halftime. Villanova quarterback Brett Gordon remained hot, completing his first 12 passes and throwing for 133 yards in the first half. His final pass of the half was a 35-yard hookup with Murle Sango (seven catches, 93 yards) to give the Wildcats the big bulge at the break.
NU's starting tailback L.J. McKanas entered the game with a tender left ankle and had the injury worsen in the first half, prompting him to return to the sideline for the remainder of the game. Freshman Anthony Riley filled in admirably with 18 carries for 95 yards, 16 of them coming in the second half for 93 yards. The offense also had a new leader in the second half as starting QB Adam Browne was lifted after a 3-11, 27-yard performance in the first half. Fellow senior Logan Galli came on and hit on 6-21 for 112 yards, including a 23-yard TD pass to Kito Delgado for NU's first points. Delgado had his third straight 100-yard game with five catches for 100 yards. He has caught the team's last three TD receptions, dating back to the winning score in the 2000 season finale against James Madison.
NU has now lost seven of its last eight games against Villanova.
