 Logan Galli gets a pass off under pressure at Harvard. |
Senior tailback L.J. McKanas had 220 yards on 44 carries to lead the Huskies. McKanas scored on a 32-yard touchdown run with 4:53 left in the third quarter and Colin Gaynor added the point-after to cut Harvard's edge to 28-20. The Huskies then forced the Crimson to punt and took over at their own 27-yard line. But, on NU's second play of the drive, quarterback Logan Galli was sacked by Andy Fried and fumbled. Harvard's Brendan McCafferty scooped up the ball and ran it back 19 yards for a key insurance score.
It was the second time in the game that Galli fumbled after being sacked by Fried. With just 11 seconds left in the first half, Fried put a viscious hit on NU's QB and the loose ball ended up in the hands of John Perry who raced 85 yards for a 28-7 Harvard lead at intermission.
NU's problems were mostly self-inflicted all afternoon. It started from the very first series when two penalties, including a personal foul, negated Harvard losses. Still, the Crimson were forced to punt from their own 44, but a brilliant fake produced a 28-yard run on fourth-and-11 by Matt Fratto. Harvard QB Neil Rose (13-22, 160 yards) hit Dan Farley on a 33-yard scoring pass on the next play for a 7-0 lead.
The Huskies handed the Crimson another great opportunity when the snap to punter Tyler Grogan sailed over his head on NU's next possession. Harvard took over at the NU 15 and needed just four plays to stake a 14-0 advantage on a 1-yard sneak by Rose.
Trailing by three scores at the break, the Huskies came out hot in the second half. Galli hit Jared Philcox on a 7-yard TD pass to complete a 14-play 70-yard TD drive to start the third quarter. Nate Mullaugh then had two chances to add the point-after thanks to an offside call on Harvard, but both kicks went wide.
NU held the Crimson on their next drive and took over at its own 44 after a Harvard punt. The Huskies marched 56 yards on seven plays, capped by the McKanas 32-yard TD run. Gaynor replaced Mullaugh and added the PAT, but NU would get no closer than the 28-20 margin.
McKanas, who ended just five yards short of his career high and three carries shy of his own NU game record for rushing attempts, now has 2474 career rushing yards, just seven away from NU's all-time mark of 2481 held by Brian Vaughan (1993-96).
NU had not met Harvard since 1990. The Crimson lead the all-time series 5-0.
