The lone Northeastern touchdown was scored on special teams, extending the Maine defense’s streak of touchdown-less games to three. Northeastern completed just 13 of 43 passes and Maine picked off four Husky attempts.
Maine’s Jake Eaton threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns to Stefan Gomes. Paris Minor also had six receptions for 137 yards. With the Black Bears leading 7-0 at half, the Huskies seemed to have gain momentum when they opened the second half with a 52-yard drive capped by a Colin Gaynor 40-yard field goal. L.J. McKanas, who led NU with 167 yards rushing, had two 30-yard runs on the drive.
The Huskies continued their surge when the ensuing kickoff was caught by Lennard Byrd and he slid out of bounds at his own 7-yard line. But, Maine responded with an 11-play, 93-yard touchdown scoring drive. Two Eaton-to-Minor passes highlighted the possession. First, the pair connected on a 64-yard play to move to the NU 19 yardline. After a Maine penalty, Eaton converted a fourth and 16 with an 18-yard toss to Minor at the NU7.
The Black Bears seemed to put the game away after their fourth interception of the day. Devon Goree collected his second pick of the afternoon, and fifth of his career, and returned it 20 yards to the NU 9-yard line. Two plays later, Eaton hit Gomes from 14 yards out for his second TD pass of the day and a 21-3 lead with 12:03 left in the fourth quarter.
Northeastern made things interesting when Quintin Mitchell returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown with 7:01 left in the game. After a Maine penalty, the Huskies went for a two-point conversion but failed when Adam Browne was tackled behind the line of scrimmage by Marcus Walton. The next kickoff return appeared to have been fumbled by Byrd but he was ruled down before losing possession.
The Huskies advanced to the Maine 13-yard line with less than three minutes left but a Rob Keirstead sack of Browne on fourth down ended the Husky comeback.
The Black Bears took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Maine marched down the field on the game’s opening drive. Eaton completed four of five passes for 65 yards, including an 16-yard scoring pass to Gomes during the possession. Freshman Chris DeVinney added the PAT to give UM the lead with 11:28 left in the first quarter. NU quarterback Logan Galli completed five of 18 passes in the first half and UMaine intercepted three of his attempts. Browne completed eight of 25 passes for 101 yards after replacing Galli in the second half.
McKanas became Northeastern’s all-time leading rusher with a first quarter run. He now has 2641 career yards, passing Brian Vaughan’s 2,481 set over the 1993-96 seasons.
