NU's last shutout was Oct. 5, 1991 against Lock Haven (34-0). The Huskies had never held a Yankee Conference/Atlantic 10 opponent without a point since joining the league in 1993.
True freshman Shawn Brady made his first career start at quarterback and provided the only touchdown of the afternoon when he made two slick moves and bolted 77 yards for a touchdown with 9:36 left in the first quarter. Another true freshman, Colin Gaynor, added the extra point. Gaynor has become the team's regular kicker and backup quarterback.
The Huskies had just five first downs, but it didn't matter as the NU defense was dominant. The Spiders had only 29 passing yards and 191 total yards of offense. The farthest Richmond advanced into NU territory was the Husky 35 and that came on the Spiders' final possession of the afternoon.
Richmond had its best chance to score on that final drive, converting two fourth-down plays, but the Spiders failed on a fourth-and-five play with under a minute left to turn the ball over on downs.
Both teams exchanged punts all afternoon with Richmond punting 10 times and NU's Tyler Grogan 11, one short of the Husky game record.
Brady was a surprise starter at QB, replacing incumbent seniors Logan Galli and Adam Browne, who had split the job through the first five games. Brady finished 6-10 for 86 yards, including two beautiful passes. The first was a 41-yarder to Kito Delgado and the other a 34-yard play to Andy Alsup, who made an incredible, fully outstretched catch. Michael Mack had a pair of catches and now has 101 in his career, just the fifth NU player in history to reach the century mark in receptions.
The defense was led by another true freshman, Liam Ezekiel, who made 13 stops, including a sack. Junior linebacker Adam Walter had another strong game with seven tackles (two for loss) with a sack and a pass breakup. The defense was without its captain, All-American free safety T.J. Hill, for a second straight game due to a rib injury.
The Huskies complete their three-game homestand on Oct. 27 against St. Mary's in the team's annual Homecoming game (kickoff 12:30 p.m.).
