St. Mary's trailed 12-7 at the half, but Chris Harrell busted a 57-yard touchdown run with 13:21 left in the third quarter for a 13-12 edge. It was all Huskies after that, however, as NU scored four unanswered touchdowns to turn the tight game into a blowout.
True freshman Shawn Brady made his second straight start at quarterback and had a big day, completing 6-10 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Brady added 69 more yards on seven rushing attempts and had a 5-yard TD run. He connected with running back Che Santos for a 63-yard TD pass, the first of Brady's career, to put NU ahead to stay with 1:34 to go in the third quarter. Brady rushed for the two-point conversion and a 20-13 lead.
Anthony Nolen picked off St. Mary's QB Gus Papanikolas on the Gaels' next possession and returned the ball to within striking distance at the 26-yard line. Brady capped a six-play drive with a 5-yard TD run to provide a 27-13 advantage with 12:35 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Gaels, who had success running the ball all afternoon (60 attempts for 360 yards) answered by moving 78 yards in nine plays and set up at the NU 3-yard line poised to make the game tight again. But, on the 10th play of the St. Mary's drive, NU defensive tackle David Williams popped Papanikolas and jarred the ball loose into the hands of teammate Art Smith.
The Huskies took their ensuing possession 94 yards in eight plays for a backbreaking touchdown. McKanas scored it on a 24-yard run with 4:34 left to play. He had 47 yards on the drive, while Kito Delgado (117 receiving yards, four receptions) had the other 47 on 31-yard and 16-yard hookups with Brady. The Gaels fumbled the kickoff, setting up the Huskies at the 27-yard line. On the first play of the NU drive, Brady hit Delgado for a 27-yard TD pass with 4:17 left to complete the scoring.
Both teams got off to slow starts with no scoring in the first quarter. NU broke the ice on the first play of the second quarter as McKanas scored his first TD from three yards out to cap a five-play 49-yard drive. It was NU's first points in the second quarter all season. McKanas made it 12-0 two series later as he broke loose on an 11-yard scoring run. The big play of the five-play, 68-yard drive was a 43-yard pass from Brady to Delgado.
The Gaels got on the board with only 19 seconds left in the half on a three-yard TD run by Heath Villareal. Harrell then put the visitors ahead for the only time of the afternoon with his 57-yard TD jaunt in the opening minutes of the second half.
The Huskies finished with 527 yards of total offense. McKanas's total of 223 rushing yards was the third-best in NU history and was the third time in his career that he topped 200 yards. He now has 1002 rushing yards this season, becoming just the second NU player ever to top the 1000 mark. He is well on pace to break Harold Scott's team record of 1282 yards set in 1988. McKanas was given the James Thornton Memorial Award as the Homecoming MVP.
