Four Northeastern turnovers and a blocked field goal were the key missed opportunities as the Huskies lost to UMass for the 16th straight time, 17-10 at McGuirk Stadium. NU fell to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic 10 play. UMass improved to 2-6, 2-4 in conference action.
It appeared the Huskies were going to break their UMass hex that dates back to the 1983 season when they last defeated the Minutemen. Art Smith ran back his second interception of the afternoon 63 yards to break a 3-3 tie and give the Huskies a 10-3 edge with 5:40 left in the third quarter. UMass tied the game on the final play of the third quarter. Guice found DeShon Hardy on a long pass and he broke loose from Charles Cameron's grasp and sprinted to the endzone to complete a 60-yard TD play that made it 10-10.
Senior tailback L.J. McKanas had another amazing game, rushing for a career-high 242 yards on 36 carries. On NU's second drive of the final quarter, McKanas had back-to-back runs of 24 and 26 yards to set up the Huskies at the UMass 11. He rushed for another yard to the Minuteman 10, but a loss of five yards on a run by Che Santos and then an incomplete pass set up a 32-yard field goal try by freshman Colin Gaynor. He had already connected from 28 yards out with 1:06 left in the first half to give NU a 3-0 advantage at intermission. But Gaynor's second attempt of the day was blocked by Ryan McHugh and the Minutemen took over at their own 23.
UMass then moved 77 yards in just six plays and a span of 2:07 to score the go-ahead touchdown. Omari Howard had the last 59 yards of the drive, highlighted by a 38-yard run and then a 15-yard TD scamper for a 17-10 lead with 5:54 to play.
The Huskies continued to give the ball to McKanas as they started their final drive at their own 20. McKanas had runs of seven and 24 yards to move NU into UMass territory and a Minuteman facemask penalty gave the Huskies a first down at the 34-yard line. Freshman Shawn Brady, making his third straight start at quarterback, converted a key third down play with a 15-yard run for another first down at the UMass 19 with under four minutes left. Brady used a QB sneak to create a first-and-goal situation at the 9-yard line as the clock neared the two-minute mark. McKanas rushed again for four yards to the 5-yard line, but he was stopped for no gain on his next attempt, and Brady was sacked for a 10-yard loss on third down. After a timeout with 56 seconds left, NU had one last play, but Brady's loft pass to senior Andy Alsup in the corner of the endzone was knocked away by Leroy Brooks. UMass then ran out the final seconds.
It was a frustrating day for the Huskies. They dominated the clock (35:44 to 24:16) and had 21 first downs to UMass's 14. But, the Huskies couldn't capitalize on several good chances. It started on NU's second series of the game when Brady fumbled at the UMass 15. The Huskies took their first drive of the second half to the UMass 16, but Brady was picked off in the endzone by Eddie Bowman on a third-down play.
McKanas fumbled two series later to set up the Minutemen at the NU 21 and UMass took advantage with a career-long 41-yard field goal by Doug White to tie the game 3-3. On UMass's next drive, Smith had his interception return for a TD to give NU the lead. The Minutemen had to punt on their next possession, and the Huskies took over at their own 25 with a seven-point lead and a chance to add to it. NU moved the ball to the UMass 36, but Santos fumbled. Two plays later Guice hit Hardy on a 60-yard TD play to knot the game 10-10.
McKanas's total of 242 yards was the second-best in NU history. He became the first Husky ever to top 3000 career yards (3180).
