Northeastern defeated New Hampshire 34-11 in the Huskies' final home game of the season at Parsons Field. NU has beaten its longtime rival by a bigger margin on only one other occasion, a 26-0 thrashing in 1963.
It was the last Parsons appearance for 19 NU seniors, including standout tailback L.J McKanas. He ran for 193 yards on 31 carries and broke the NU single-season rushing record. He finished the game with 1437 rushing yards this season, far surpassing the old mark of 1282 set by Harold Scott in the 1988 season. McKanas scored three touchdowns to tie the oldest NU record on the books, Jim Connolly's season mark for rushing TDs (11) set in 1936. The Huskies are now 4-5 in 2001, 3-4 in Atlantic 10 play.
NU entered the game having scored just one touchdown on its previous 47 series against A10 opponents, but marched right down the field on its first possession and took a 6-0 lead as McKanas capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.
The Huskies controlled the clock and forced a pair of UNH interceptions in the first quarter, but couldn't capitilize. With four minutes left in the first half, freshman quarterback Shawn Brady found Michael Mack on a 19-yard TD pass for a 13-0 NU lead. UNH got on the scoreboard with a 29-yard Bob MacDonald field goal just 40 seconds before the half.
McKanas and the Huskies broke it open after intermission. NU scored three TDs in a span of less than three minutes. McKanas went in from one yard out for a 20-3 edge. Then Art Smith picked off his sixth pass and ran it back to the UNH 4-yard line to set up a Brady 4-yard TD run. Finally, after a Wildcat punt, McKanas broke a 75-yard socring run to provide a huge 34-3 cushion with 5:44 left in the third quarter. It was the longest run of McKanas's career.
