The win was NU's most lopsided opening day victory in the history of the program. The Huskies and Bald Eagles had met twice before with similar results. In 1990, NU won 52-6 and then defeated Lock Haven 34-0 the following year.
Husky sophomore quarterback Shawn Brady completed 10 of 16 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown. NU rushed for 263 yards on 62 carries. Senior William Griffin ran for 57 yards and two touchdowns, junior Tim Gale had 55 yards and one score, and redshirt freshman Anthony Riley gained 56 yards.
"Everything for us starts with doing a good job with the run game, and I felt we did that today," said third-year NU head coach Don Brown. "A number of guys ran the ball well. It's nice to see all those guys touch the ball."
The first half couldn't have gone any better for the Huskies. NU scored on five of its first six drives, going into the break with a 31-0 lead. The Huskies racked up 143 yards on the ground and 145 through the air, while holding the Bald Eagles to 32 total yards. NU held a 17-2 first down advantage and was successful on nine of 11 third-down conversions.
"We have a lot of guys who are shaking the rust off and a lot of young guys offensively who Shawn (Brady) had to deal with," Brown said. "I just didn’t know how we were going to go at first. But I think we answered that bell. We came right out in the first four of five series and had four scores."
On NU's first possession, Brady marched the Huskies 81 yards in 12 plays during a 5:09 scoring drive. On first and goal from the Lock Haven 2-yard line, senior running back Griffin took an inside handoff, bounced it outside right tackle Tom Olivo, and waltzed into the endzone untouched for his first career touchdown. Redshirt freshman Miro Kesic converted the extra point.
During the drive, Riley carried the ball six times for 31 yards, while Brady went 3 for 3 for 43 yards. The Huskies converted three third-down conversions. Brady broke the drive open with a 23-yard completion to Cody Thompson down to the Lock Haven 15.
On the next Northeastern possession, Brady went deep on third and one from the Lock Haven 47 and was intercepted by Kellen Bush at the 3-yard line. Four plays later, including an 18-yard punt, the Huskies took over on the Bald Eagle 25. The drive seemed to stall at the Lock Haven 6 with the Huskies facing fourth down with three yards to go, but Riley bulled his way behind the line and gained four yards on his second effort. Fullback Tim Gale capped the drive with a 2-yard TD run up the middle. After Kesic's kick, NU led 14-0 with 14:24 remaining in the half.
Northeastern's next scoring drive also ended with a 2-yard TD plunge, this time by freshman Frank McDonald, who ended an 11-play, 62-yard drive that lasted 4:40. The series was kept alive by Quintin Mitchell, who gathered a Brady screen pass, utilized great blocks by John McDonald and Adam Bourget, and raced 29 yards down the sideline to overcome a third and seven situation.
The next Husky possession ended with a 23-yard scoring strike from Brady to freshman Cory Parks on third and 10. NU went 71 yards in seven plays and took 2:03 off the clock. After Kesic's kick, the Huskies led 28-0 and the rout was on.
Lock Haven took over on its own 31 with 4:09 remaining in the half. And, after taking advantage of a pass interference call, the Bald Eagles looked like they might cross the 50 for the first time in the game only to have sophomore linebacker Liam Ezekial tip Bill Witmer's pass into the hands of senior Adam Walter. He returned the interception 19 yards to the Lock Haven 39, setting up another scoring chance.
On the ensuing drive, Griffin put together three runs for 31 yards to set up Kesic's 18-yard field goal with five seconds left in the half, which gave NU a 31-0 halftime advantage.
After intermission, Northeastern kept adding to its lead. Scott Quimby recovered a Lock Haven fumble for the Huskies at the Bald Eagle 14 to set up Griffin's second 2-yard TD run of the game. After Kesic's kick, NU led 38-0 with 11:36 left in the third.
On the ensuing Lock Haven drive, the Huskies' Gavin Potter blocked Greg Knaus' punt attempt and NU took over at the Lock Haven 17. The Huskies settled for a 24-yard Kesic field goal.
Northeastern's final score of the game was a 16-yard touchdown scamper by redshirt freshman Bobby French. The drive was set up by an interception by Rold Louis.
"I thought we came out and were sharp in the kicking game, we were sharp offensively and defensively. It was just a solid team effort. Overall, I thought we did what we had to do," added Brown.
