With losses by Maine and Massachusetts, and a win by William & Mary, the Huskies are now in a four-way tie for first place in the A10 with a 5-2 conference record. The Huskies have tied their mark for most conference wins set by the 1997 team, which was 5-3 in the league.
"That was very good football team we played today," NU head coach Don Brown said. "They had not allowed a 100-yard rusher until today. Gale gave us a monster effort. We talked about on the offensive side of the ball being able to run it against a great defense so that we could be two-dimensional with the running and the passing game. I thought we did that successfully today."
Following a 28-point first-half performance, which gave NU a 28-7 lead at the break, the Northeastern defense and running attack took over in the second half to give the Huskies the crucial win over the visiting Wildcats. The victory for Northeastern marks its eighth of the year, tying a single-season school record for wins, which was accomplished in 1997 (8-3) and 1963 (8-0).
Gale rushed for a game-high 123 yards en route to the first back-to-back 100-yard games of his Northeastern career. He gained 155 yards with two touchdowns in NU's 24-21 win over Richmond last Saturday in Virginia.
Leading the way for the NU defense was sophomore linebacker Liam Ezekiel, who was named the winner of the James Thornton Memorial Award as the Homecoming Most Valuable Player. Ezekiel recorded 15 tackles, including one forced fumble, and added two fumble recoveries.
"On defense we got back to creating turnovers, which is the piece that has been missing since the Delaware game," Coach Brown said. "Even in our couple of wins since Delaware we haven't generated any points on defense, but obviously we got that done today."
"We just find ways to win," Ezekiel said.
NU's standout cornerback Art Smith took the opening kickoff from Adam James and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. Standing a few yards deep in the endzone, Smith received the ball behind the right hashmarks and sprung loose down the left sideline. Bismark Osei was Smith's lead blocker, leading the way down Villanova's sideline. It was Northeastern's first kick return for a touchdown since Oct. 7, 2000, when Andy Alsup (1998-2001) returned a kick 93 yards for the score.
Villanova took over on the next possession at its own 24-yard line and began to march downfield. The Wildcats had success through the air as Brett Gordon connected on three consecutive passes for 36 yards. Northeastern's tough defense stood strong on third and nine with the ball on the Huskies' 27-yard line, forcing 'Nova to attempt a field goal. Villanova faked the three-point try as holder Scott Lukash's pass fell incomplete for the intended receiver Cameron Cross. NU took over on downs.
Northeastern's Miro Kesic then missed a 40-yard field goal attempt with 7:39 remaining in the first quarter, giving Villanova the ball on their own 23. Gordon once again led the 'Cats downfield on a 13-play, 77-yard scoring drive capped by a five-yard TD pass to Brian White, tying the score at 7-7.
Both offenses then appeared to sputter as they each traded two punts apiece. The next scoring drive occurred when Northeastern started a drive in Villanova territory, on the 40-yard line. Gale was the workhorse on the scoring march for NU as he tallied 23 yards on five carries, including the final four-yard gain for six points. The Huskies took a 14-7 lead with 7:57 remaining in the half.
On the ensuing drive, Villanova was moving the ball until the NU defense came up with a big play. Gordon connected on a 32-yard pass play to Cameron Cross and a 30-yarder to Matt Chila to get the Wildcats in Husky territory. With the ball on NU's 7-yard line, the Huskies blitzed Gordon. Senior linebacker Joe Gazzola hit Gordon as he attempted his pass, causing the ball to pop up in the air and it was picked off by Neil Anderson. With nothing but daylight in front of him, Anderson returned the interception 90 yards, giving NU a 21-7 lead with 4:52 on the clock.
Following a 20-yard kickoff return by Villanova's Mo Gibson, the Wildcats took over on their own 29-yard line. On the very first play from scrimmage, Terry Butler rushed for a gain of six yards, but NU's Ezekiel forced and recovered a fumble at Villanova's 25-yard line.
Northeastern took advantage of the turnover once again as they advanced eight plays for 25 yards and six points. Gale once again capped off the drive with a three-yard touchdown with 4:00 left on the clock in the first half. The biggest play of the NU scoring drive occurred on fourth-and-one from Nova's 4-yard line. NU head coach Don Brown sent the offense out to attempt a try at the first down and Brady drew the Wildcats offsides for the first down. NU took the 28-7 lead into the locker room at intermission.
The second half was all NU as the defense was relentless right from Villanova's first series. In the midst of a Villanova march downfield, Ezekiel came up with a big play for NU. Gordon dropped back for a pass as Smith was sent into the backfield on a cornerback blitz. Smith crushed Gordon, forcing a fumble at the NU 46-yard line, which Ezekiel fell on at the 44. NU's offense answered the 'Nova turnover with three points, courtesy of a 33-yard Kesic field goal. Villanova responded on its next drive with a 14-play, 95-yard touchdown drive that ended with an eight-yard TD pass from Gordon to Shaz Brown. Gordon was dominant on the scoring rally as he completed seven balls for 68 yards, but that would be the last points of the day for the Wildcats. Gordon was sacked by Steve Anzalone on a two-point conversion attempt. The 13-point output for Villanova's offense on the day was its lowest point total of the season.
The Huskies battled back with a 14-play drive of their own using 6:57 of the clock, but didn't put points on the board as Kesic missed a 39-yarder.
"That was the most important series of the game," Coach Brown said. "Villanova is a very explosive team, so for us to keep them off the field that long was big."
Villanova then turned the ball over on downs setting up NU for its final scoring possession. Gale broke loose a 34-yard touchdown run to ice the game for the Huskies, recording his third score of the contest.
Gordon threw for 310 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while Butler gained a team-high 53 yards on the ground. Brown was Gordon's top target as he caught nine passes for 94 yards and one score.
