The win is NU's ninth this year, setting a school mark for wins in a season (eclipsing the 8-0 team of 1963 and 8-3 Huskies of 1997). Gale scored on runs of 2, 17, 2, 6 and 44 yards to break the record for TDs in a game, formerly held by Gary Benoit (four vs. AIC on Oct. 16, 1982) and Bill Curran (four vs. AIC on Oct. 8, 1966). Gale also broke Benoit's game record for scoring (26 points) with his 30-point effort.
NU turned a tight 21-17 game at the half into a blowout by dominating after intermission. The Wildcats managed just 26 total yards in the second half, while the Huskies scored four unanswered times, the first three by Gale and the last by Anthony Riley (career-high 144 yards). The Huskies finished with 380 rushing yards, their most-ever against an A10 opponent. NU's total of 49 points also was the team's most ever in a conference game. The Huskies forced six turnovers, turning three of them into touchdowns.
"This was a game we were really concerned about on the road," said NU head coach Don Brown. "But we stepped up and got the win and we've put ourselves in position for a great achievement, an overachievement."
The Huskies (9-2, 6-2 A10), ranked 10th in the current ESPN/USA Today poll and 12th in the Sports Network national rankings, are in pursuit of the program's first-ever Div. IAA playoff berth. NU entered the game in a four-way tie for first place in the A10 and finishes the day in a two-way tie as William & Mary and UMass both lost on Saturday. Maine and NU share first place at 6-2 in the conference. It is the highest total of conference wins ever for the Huskies. NU finishes the regular season at home against James Madison next week, while Maine hosts UNH.
NU put Gale to work on the first series of the second half as he carried nine times for 37 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown run, on a 14-play drive covering 68 yards and using 7:30 of the clock. The Huskies then forced a UNH punt and scored a decisive TD on the ensuing series. Starting from their own 16, the Huskies got runs of nine and 29 yards by Gale and a 40-yarder from Riley for a first-and-goal at the UNH 6-yard line. Gale punched it in and suddenly the Huskies had a comfortable 35-17 advantage with 1:49 left in the third quarter.
"Going into the half it was anybody's game," Coach Brown said. "I thought the drive coming out to start the second half was big. Then we stopped them right away and we started to get it rolling."
Gale busted a 44-yard run to make it a 42-17 game midway through the fourth quarter and Riley scampered in from 16 yards on NU's next drive to complete the scoring. Redshirt freshman kicker Miro Kesic added his seventh straight PAT of the afternoon and set a new school record for consecutive extra points with his 44th in a row.
"Gale has been a workhorse for us," Coach Brown said. "Look at the numbers, they speak for themselves. He has gotten some very tough yards in the past three weeks."
UNH moved 55 yards in seven plays on its opening drive and took a 6-0 lead when Stephan Lewis (159 yards) scored from three yards out. It was all Huskies after that as the Wildcats blew the extra point for their first of many miscues on a frigid and snowy day. NU answered UNH's scoring drive with an eight-play, 63-yard series of its own, capped by Gale's first score of the day, a 2-yard dive. Kesic added the point-after and the Huskies took the lead for good with 8:44 left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats were forced to a fourth-and-long situation on their next possession and the snap went well over the head of punter Josh Polgar, who chased down the ball 48 yards behind the line of scrimmage to set up NU at the UNH 17. Gale took the next play in for a TD to put the Huskies up two scores with 6:04 left in the opening quarter.
After a UNH punt, the Huskies moved to the UNH 29 before Shawn Brady was picked off in the endzone ending a run of 83 straight passes without an interception. The Huskies got the ball right back, however, as Anthony Nolen intercepted UNH QB Mike Granieri on the 'Cats first play from scrimmage and ran it back to the 2-yard line. Brady punched it in on a sneak and Kesic added the kick for a 21-6 edge with 3:26 left in the first quarter.
UNH responded with a 12-play, 66-yard drive finished by an 8-yard Lewis TD run. Lewis caught a pass from Granieri for a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 21-14 with 14:20 left in the first half. Riley then fumbled to halt a Husky drive in UNH territory and the Wildcats kept moving the ball, marching to the Husky 12 before the drive stalled. Connor McCormick nailed a 29-yard field goal with 8:23 left in the second quarter to complete the first-half scoring and make it a 21-17 game at the break.
