The Huskies, picked to finish 10th in the annual preseason conference coaches poll, will go to the 16-team NCAA postseason for the first time. NU finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-2 and 7-2 in the A10, identical to Maine. Villanova and UMass both won on Saturday to finish in a tie for third place with 6-3 records. Since NU and Maine did not meet, the next tiebreaker is the teams' record against the third-place finishers. The Huskies defeated both UMass and Villanova, while Maine beat Villanova but lost to UMass. So, NU has won the A10's automatic bid for the first time.
NU defeated JMU with the same aggressive, havoc-causing style that has become the team's hallmark. The Huskies forced seven turnovers, matching their most ever against an A10 team, and turned five of them into touchdowns.
"We went out there with a purpose today," said NU head coach Don Brown. "We played the kind of defense that wins championships and that’s what we talked about as a defense. At 10-2 we’ve achieved all the goals that we’ve had for the regular season. I just remember a lot of these guys in 2000 talking about winning a championship and it all came true today."
Sophomore linebacker Liam Ezekiel had the first big play of the day, picking off a Jayson Cooke pass and returning it 28 yards for his first career touchdown. After Miro Kesic added the extra point, NU led 7-0 with 58 seconds left in the first quarter. Adam Walter intercepted Cooke on JMU's next series and ran it back to the Dukes' 33-yard line. Five plays later, NU was in the endzone again as Shawn Brady scored on a third-down play from five yards out.
"There are 11 athletes on the field all the time and everybody wants to make a big play," Ezekiel said. "We come at it and have an aggressive style of defense that creates turnovers for us. And we've got the guys on our side who can capitalize on those."
"Our goals are to score on defense or to set up our offense in good position," Coach Brown said. "We get after you enough where we’re going to get a chance to make some big plays. The bottom line is I’ve got guys around me that when I call that corner blitz I can feel the electricity from the sideline. I know Artie’s [Art Smith] getting ready to go and Joe Gazzola, [Steve] Anzalone and Zeke [Liam Ezekiel] and all those guys just make the call and we let it rip. We’ve got guys that are aggressive and like to play the game and are passionate about the way they handle themselves on the field."
After the Huskies turned JMU's first two miscues into scores, the visitor's problems continued as Jason Mallory was hit by Joe Gazzola and lost the ball into the arms of NU's Anthony Nolen at the Dukes' 34. Gale took the next play 34 yards for a TD and a 20-0 lead. Kesic's kick hit the upright, ending a school-record streak of 46 PATs.
The Dukes went three and out on their next possession, and NU needed just three plays to score again as redshirt freshman Anthony Riley busted a 48-yard run for a touchdown with 5:08 left before halftime. Kesic added the kick for a 27-0 bulge. NU took the comfortable edge into intermission.
The Huskies went into cruise control in the second half. The Dukes broke through for a 47-yard field goal by Burke George and then a 37-yard TD pass from Cooke to Alan Harrison as JMU cut the deficit to 27-10 with 1:43 left in the third quarter. The Dukes would get no closer, however, as Steve Anzalone hit Cooke on JMU's next drive, forcing a fumble, which was scooped up by David Williams and returned 38 yards for a backbreaking TD with just nine seconds left in the third quarter.
Brady would later add his second rushing TD of the day on a 1-yard sneak to complete the scoring. The touchdown was set up by another JMU turnover as Art Smith forced a Rondell Bradley fumble and Anzalone recovered at the Dukes' 15.
The Huskies controlled the line of scrimmage once again, which was key on a 39-degree day with wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour. Gale had his fourth straight 100-yard game with 132 rushing yards on 22 carries.
"We’re built on being able to run the ball and in late November and December," Coach Brown said. "If you can’t run the ball around here, you can’t win. Because you need to be able to run the football and play defense to have a chance at a championship, especially late in the year, and that’s the way we’ve built our program and our team. We’re passionate on the field and then we’ve got a quiet leader on offense [Shawn Brady]. He doesn’t care what his stats are, but he’s 14-4 as a starter and that says enough. He just does what he needs to do to win and get that offense focused and we can run the football with any team in the country."
NU has now won nine straight home games and 11 of its last 12 at Parsons Field.
The Huskies will likely host a first-round NCAA playoff game, but will await the field and sites, which will be announced on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPNews and NESN. NU will gather to watch the selection show at the Makris Varsity Club in Matthews Arena.
I’m still in shock," said NU cornerback Art Smith. "We believed in each other, it just had to happen and we proved it."
"We’re for real," Coach Brown said. "If anybody had any questions about whether we were real or not, watch the way we’ve handled ourselves over the last few football games and you wouldn’t have any doubts. We feel good about our chances going into the tournament and we’ll be ready to go next week."
The Huskies did have a pair of key casualties as Adam Walter left the game with a severe ankle injury and Joe Gazzola was writhing in pain after suffering an elbow injury. The status of both players will be updated on Sunday.
