Fordham kicker Matt Fordyce made five field goals (35, 45, 23, 25, 42) to lead the Rams. NU running back Tim Gale had his fifth straight 100-yard game (tying the NU record) with 123 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. He finishes the season with 16 (14 rushing, two receiving) to break Dave Klemic's school record for total touchdowns (15) set in 1998.
NU, seeeded fourth in the 16-team Div. IAA field, was upset by the Patriot League champion Rams, who jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never trailed. The Huskies (10-3) made it tight in the second half, cutting the deficit to 19-17 with 6:20 left in the third quarter when sophomore quarterback Shawn Brady found freshman Cory Parks in the back of the endzone for a 31-yard scoring play.
The Huskies then forced a Fordham punt and Anthony Riley ran it back to the Rams' 49-yard line. Suddenly all the momentum had swung to NU's side. But Fordham stuffed Gale on first down and after a Brady four-yard run, the Huskies faced third-and-five. Brady's pass to Eric Thomas fell incomplete and NU had to punt. The Huskies forced two more Fordham punts, but the Rams continued the pressure on defense, preventing NU from picking up a first down on its next two series.
The Rams engineered a key, seven-play, 69-yard drive capped by a Kirwin Watson 30-yard run to go up 26-17 with 8:52 left to play. The Huskies, needing two scores, went to their no-huddle offense and were making progress, advancing to the Fordham 32 before Brady was picked off by Aymen Aboushi with 6:32 left in the fourth quarter.
The NU defense again delivered, stopping the Rams in three plays and forcing a punt. But, Riley mishandled the ball off the foot of Fordyce and Jerome Robinson recovered for the Rams. The play led to a 42-yard Fordyce field goal, his fifth of the day, to put Fordham up 29-17 with 2:50 to go.
The Huskies rallied with a 12-play, 70-yard drive in just 1:58 and created the game's final margin when Gale scored on an option play from one yard out with 52 seconds left on the clock. Miro Kesic attempted an onside kick, but the Rams recovered and ran out the clock.
NU entered the game ranked among the national leaders in turnover margin, but gave away two and didn't force any turnovers.
“We pride ourselves on taking care of the ball, we were plus 18 coming into today and then we were minus two today," Coach Brown said. "We are the kind of team that doesn’t have a lot of margin for error.”
“I have to credit Fordham, they played very well," Coach Brown added. "Obviously they were turnover-free, while we had two costly ones in the second half. We had our opportunities to get things done and it just didn’t happen for us today. They made more plays then we did."
"I am not unhappy with the effort though, as we got great effort. I have gotten great effort from this group all year long. We fought hard for 60 minutes and I am proud of the way this football team carried themselves as men. Bottom line is that this was a hard-fought football game by two great teams and someone had to go home unhappy and unfortunately that was us.”
The Rams came right out and took their opening drive into the endzone as Eakin (20-37, 269 yards) connected with Peter Modelski on a 52-yard pass play (the longest for a TD against NU this season) just 2:03 into the game. The Huskies went three plays and out on their first series and the Rams took over after a punt at the NU 45. The good field position led to a Fordyce 35-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead with 7:52 left in the first quarter.
“Even when we were down 10-0, I didn’t think we were out of it, it felt like we could get it under control in which we did," Coach Brown said.
NU started its comeback on a fourth-and-one attempt at the Fordham 43-yard line early in the second quarter. Originally the punt team came out, but after a timeout, Coach Brown sent his offense back in and Gale carried up the middle not only for a first down, but a 43-yard touchdown. Fordyce got two more field goals and the Rams took a 16-7 lead into the lockerroom.
The Huskies got the ball to start the second half and a 13-play drive that consumed 6:07 produced a 34-yard Kesic field goal to make it 16-10 with 8:53 to go in the third quarter. NU gave the points right back, however, as Eakin found a wide open Erik Conroy on a play-action pass for 73 yards to start the Rams' ensuing series. The play went all the way to the Husky 12 and led to a 25-yard Fordyce field goal and a 19-10 hole with 7:13 left in the third quarter.
Even with the loss, it was a season filled with highlights for the Huskies. In addition to setting new school records for total wins (10) and conference victories (seven), NU had 10 All-Conference players and the Coach of the Year as the Huskies won a share of their first Atlantic 10 title.
“We will take this experience with us and will have some unfinished business next year," Coach Brown said.
Added senior captain Art Smith, who played his final game as a Husky, "We shouldn’t be disappointed, we had a great year and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
