Third-year head coach Don Brown knew his defense was going to be tough this season, but even he would probably not have predicted the complete dominance that the Huskies produced against Ohio. NU forced four Ohio fumbles, including one returned for a 49-yard touchdown by Art Smith in the first quarter. The Huskies took the 7-0 lead into the half.
Northeastern came right out in the second half and marched 80 yards in nine plays as William Griffin capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 NU edge. Two Ohio drives later, the Husky defense struck again as Gavin Potter picked off a deflected Dontrell Jackson pass and ran it back five yards for a 21-0 lead. The Huskies forced another fumble on Ohio's next possession, setting up a 7-yard TD pass from Shawn Brady to Kevin Lawlor.
"We knew when we saw them play well against Pitt last week (a 27-14 loss) that we would have our hands full," Brown said. "This was a challenge and I think we responded to the challenge in every way. These guys have played a lot of football together and the defense is playing at an unbelievable level."
"This was the biggest win in my career at NU," said Steve Anzalone of Weymouth, who was credited 11 tackles, including five for loss. "Playing a IA opponent is big. We know we have a real good team here. We know we can win and play with anybody."
"I can't say that I'm not embarassed," said Ohio senior tailback Chad Brinker. "I'm embarassed for us and for the university. They blitzed us and confused us at times."
"This was an embarassing, embarassing night," said Ohio head coach Brian Knorr. "Northeastern played tremendously well, we didn't. They just made plays, we didn't."
Anthony Riley led the ground game with 86 yards on 11 carries, including a career-long 41-yard run on NU’s second play of a scoring drive to start the second half. Griffin added 65 yards on 15 attempts.
Even with all the havoc the NU defense caused, it could have been worse for Ohio. The Huskies had a great chance to strike early in the game when Scott Quimby and Adam Walter teamed up for a fumble-forcing sack of quarterback Fred Ray deep in Bobcat territory. Quimby controlled the fumble momentarily at about the Ohio 4-yard line, but he lost it and the ball went out the endzone for a touchback. The Bobcats maintained possession at their own 20 and marched to the NU 29 before stalling. Kevin Kerr, who needs just one more field goal to become Ohio’s all-time leader, missed from 46 yards out and NU took over. The Huskies turned it over at midfield when Griffin fumbled, but NU got it right back when Jason Caesar coughed up the ball on a reverse for Ohio to start its drive. Smith picked it up and sprinted untouched for a 49-yard touchdown. Ohio native Miro Kesic added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 3:33 left in the first quarter.
The Bobcats didn’t get much going on their next three series, failing to advance into NU territory and punting each time as the defense was stifling. Ohio had its best chance to get on the board with its final drive of the first half. The Bobcats started at the Husky 44-yard line and Brinker broke a 23-yard run on the second play of the series to set up a first-down play at the NU 17. The defense held, however, and forced another field goal try by Kerr. His 34-yarder was wide, extending a streak of futility to eight straight misses since he tied the school’s career record for field goals.
The Huskies had a great drive to start the second half, going 80 yards in nine plays and scoring their second TD when Griffin scooted through the right side on a third-and-three play. “That was certainly a big series,” Brown said. “We came right out and Shawn [Brady] got the offense moving.”
The teams then traded punts with NU’s Tyler Grogan pinning Ohio at its own 8-yard line. On the second play of the series, Ray had a pass deflected at the line that appeared to bounce off the ground and into the arms of Potter, who ran five yards for a TD. The ball actually hit off the foot of an Ohio lineman, making it a Franco Harris style “immaculate interception.”
“That was a back-breaking play,” Brinker said. “All of a sudden it’s 21 nothing, just like that.”
It only got worse for the Bobcats and their stunned fans, who began making their way to the exits when the Huskies capitalized again after forcing another turnover. James Abosi and Walter hammered Ray and he fumbled. Walter recovered at the Ohio 25 and five plays later, Brady found a wide open Kevin Lawlor for a 7-yard TD pass and a 28-0 lead.
The Bobcats never really threatened again as they headed into the fourth quarter down four scores. Kesic added a 31-yard field goal to complete the scoring.
The Huskies are now 2-1 against Div. IA opponents. They lost to Boston College 33-22 in 1999 and defeated IA upstart UConn 35-27 in 2000.
