At 3-0, NU is off to its best start since 1967, when Coach Joe Zabilski’s Huskies won the first five games out of the gate en route to a 7-1 record. UMass fell to 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. It was the most points ever scored by an NU team in an A10 game and the Huskies' largest margin of victory against a conference opponent.
After leading 7-3 at the half, Northeastern blew the game open with 28 third-quarter points to take a comfortable 35-10 lead. The Husky defense accounted for 14 of those points with a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown by Anthony Nolen and a 98-yard interception return for a TD by Kurt Abrams.
“Our whole focus this week was to play well, that is all we really talked about," said NU head coach Don Brown, the former defensive coordinator at UMass. "This is just the first step in the Atlantic 10 and we needed to play well. I was a little nervous coming off of the bye week. I mean I didn’t know how sharp we would be and was concerned about catching up to the speed level, but I thought we did a very good job of that.”
The third-quarter scoring was started by NU fullback Tim Gale, who bulled his way in from the 1-yard line to cap the Huskies’ five-play, 65-yard drive on their first possession of the second half. “Coming out of the second half that drive gave us some space, because they can score from anywhere and they had given us a lot schematic problems in the first half with the no huddle and no back sets and I thought that we made some good adjustments at the half,” said Coach Brown, who is now 1-2 against his former team.
“I thought the big series was when they came right out in the second half and marched right down the field to make it 14-3," said UMass head coach Mark Whipple. “They came out and played much better in the third quarter and that was the difference. The bottom line is that we got beat by a better football team.”
On Northeastern’s next drive, Quintin Mitchell scored on a 16-yard screen pass from Shawn Brady, craftily slicing through the Minuteman secondary before crossing the goal line unscathed to put NU up 21-3 with 9:40 left in the third quarter.
Nolen picked off Krohn on UMass's next possession and sprinted 60 yards for a TD. Miro Kesic added the point-after and suddenly the Huskies had a 28-3 edge.
The Minutemen came right back and started to grab the momentum. They marched 72 yards in five plays over a span of just 2:02, scoring when Krohn hit Adrian Zullo on a 35-yard pass to make it 28-10.
UMass then forced the Huskies to punt after three plays and started moving the ball again. The Minutemen were poised to cut into the lead farther, advancing deep into NU territory before Abrams collected a pass from Krohn that was tipped by Neil Anderson and raced 98 yards with an interception for a touchdown on the final play of the third quarter. It gave the Huskies a commanding 35-10 lead.
The Minutemen closed the gap to 35-17 after a 12-yard touchdown pass from Krohn to Neil Brown with 12:38 left in the game. The UMass defense then stopped the Huskies on their next drive and the Minutemen were rolling with eight minutes left, when Abrams came up with his second interception of the game at the UMass 37 and returned it to the 11.
Abrams' play set up Brady’s 8-yard scoring strike to Cody Thompson. Kesic’s extra point completed the scoring and gave the Huskies a 42-17 lead with 5:32 remaining in the game.
Krohn finished with 401 passing yards, connecting on 33-52 passes. Northeastern sophomore quarterback Brady was an efficient 10-19 for 224 yards and touchdowns of 16 and 8 yards. He improved to 7-2 as the team's starting QB. Meanwhile, the Husky ground attack gained 124 yards on 42 carries. Anthony Riley led the way with 67 yards and a TD on 14 carries.
Defensively, senior outside linebacker Adam Walter led the team with a career-high 14 tackles (11 solo), while senior cornerback Art Smith had 10 stops. Abrams had nine tackles to go with the two interceptions.
The Huskies opened the game by shutting down the vaunted UMass offense, then marched 86 yards in nine plays for a touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead with 9:05 left in the first quarter. Riley took a handoff up the middle, shook off a bevy of UMass defenders, and bounced it outside for an 18-yard score.
The 7-0 score would hold until just before the break, when UMass kicker Doug White knocked a 44-yard field goal through the uprights with 19 seconds on the clock. The points were the first allowed by the Northeastern defense this season after nine scoreless quarters.
UMass ended with 28 first downs to NU's 18 and had 427 yards to the Huskies' 348. But, again, turnovers were a huge factor as the NU defense forced three, while the Husky offense took care of the ball without a turnover.
“If you look at the yards battle, we didn’t win that today, but we did win the turnover battle, scoring twice on that," Coach Brown said. "It’s a real team effort here. We have a young offense and it gets better every week.”
Coach Brown said the history against UMass was a non-issue. “There was a lot of talk made about the 16-year streak and all, but our guys don’t know anything about it and neither do I," Brown said.
“I think heading into this week, it would have been easy for us to be glad about the last two wins. But it was kind of good because I sat with the captains this week and they were like, ‘Coach, we are ready to go.’ But that’s the thing, I have guys that know the other side of this. In the 2000 season we were 4-7 and we had one win in the Atlantic 10. Our leadership, our core guys understand the day-to-day, game-to-game mentality. Our leadership is tremendous on this football team.”
