Offensively, NU's William Griffin had the first 100-yard performance of his career and was the first Husky to surpass the century mark this season. Griffin grounded out 126 yards and had two touchdowns on 24 carries. Anthony Riley rolled up 93 yards on 20 rushes. NU totaled 341 yards, while holding Hofstra to 273 total yards.
The Huskies improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while the Pride fell to 2-3 and 2-2 in the A10. It is the first 2-0 start for NU in its conference history. The Huskies, ranked 10th in the current ESPN/USA Today poll and 14th in the Sports Network poll, are now 4-0 for the first time since the 1967 team opened 5-0. Hofstra entered the game ranked 24th in both polls.
“I will be honest, I was very concerned about our emotional level coming into this because we have had three emotional games in a row," said NU head coach Don Brown. "I don’t think we were quite up to it initially, we made a lot of mistakes early. But then we settled in and showed some character.”
Husky senior linebacker Adam Walter finished with a team-high 10 tackles and two sacks, senior defensive end Steve Anzalone had eight unassisted tackles and three sacks, and James Abosi and Scott Quimby both registered a sack.
Northeastern took control of the game on the last drive of the third quarter. With his team up 14-10, NU quarterback Shawn Brady led the Huskies 76 yards in 12 plays for a score, consuming 5:49 off the clock. On a crucial third-and-six play at the Hofstra 39, Griffin took a pitch from Brady around the left end and used a downfield block from Ryan Gibbons en route to a 15-yard gain and a first down. After a holding penalty, NU faced first and 20 from the Hofstra 24. Brady pitched to Riley, who stopped in the backfield and threw a 24-yard touchdown strike to a wide open Brady. Miro Kesic's kick put the Huskies ahead 21-10 on the last play of the third quarter.
It was a deflating play for the Pride. “Kevin Morris, our offensive coordinator, calls a great game," Coach Brown said. "We felt that we had the ball on the move and we were going no huddle so that they couldn’t change packages. That [Riley pass to Brady] was a great call. I don't think Shawn had one of his better days passing the ball (8-22, 93 yards), but that was sure a big catch.”
The teams battled back-and-forth in the first quarter for field position. Hofstra took over at its own 46-yard line with 7:10 on the clock and marched 40 yards in nine plays before the drive stalled at the NU 14. The Pride settled for a 31-yard field goal by Chris Onorato and a 3-0 lead with 3:52 remaining in the first.
Early in the second quarter, with Hofstra facing third and 11 at the NU 37, Anzalone sacked Pride quarterback Ryan Cosentino, dropping him for a 13-yard loss. The Huskies appeared to be gaining momentum after a Pride personal foul gave the Huskies first and 10 at the NU 31, but on the second play from scrimmage, Hofstra's Robert Thomas picked off Brady and raced 43 yards down the sideline for a score. Onorato's extra point gave the Pride a 10-0 lead with 12:15 left before the half.
The Pride's defensive touchdown awakened the sluggish Huskies, who took the ensuing kickoff and marched 66 yards in eight plays for a score to cut the lead to 10-7. Brady took the snap, ran down the line on an option play and pitched the ball to Griffin, who sprinted into the corner of the endzone untouched.
The Husky scoring drive originated on the NU 34 with 12:15 remaining in the second quarter. After converting only one of six third-down chances in the first quarter, Griffin grounded out five yards on third and two for a first down. Brady then connected with Quintin Mitchell and Curtis Gilliam for consecutive 24-yard gains to set up first and goal at the Hofstra 5.
The Northeastern defense fed off the offense's success, shutting down the Pride the rest of the half. Anzalone and Abosi both had sacks as the Husky pressure intensified. Then, with 2:30 left before the break, Art Smith picked off Cosentino at the NU 43.
Cosentino would finish the day with 299 yards and a touchdown, completing 25 of 43 attempts. He threw for 125 yards in the first quarter before the defense discovered Hofstra's offensive line weaknesses. After Smith's interception, Husky coach Don Brown called Riley's number three times in a row and he responded with gains of nine, seven, and 11 yards to give NU first and 10 at the Pride 30. Brady hit Gale in the flat for a four-yard gain. On the following play, Brady went back to Gale, connecting with him on a sideline pass. Gale collected the pass, shed a tackler at the line of scrimmage, and raced down the sideline before bulling over three Hofstra defenders at the goal line. Miro Kesic converted the PAT and the Huskies went into the half leading 14-10.
Coming into the contest, the Huskies owned the third quarter, outscoring their opponents 59-7. The Pride threatened that domination, when Le'Var Star intercepted Brady and returned the ball to the NU 22. On the first play of the drive, Cosentino hit Jamaal Perry on a slant and Perry turned the five-yard reception into an 18-yard gain, giving Hofstra first and goal at the 1-yard line. Pride running back Vemba Bukula took a handoff and tried to round the corner when he was drilled by cornerback Charles Cameron. The ball was jarred loose and NU's Scott Quimby recovered the ball at the 5-yard line.
After the teams traded punts to start the fourth quarter, Hofstra tried to close the gap. Cosentino drove the Pride over midfield only to have the NU defense bear down on him. Walter and Anzalone had back-to-back sacks to set up a third-and-32 play. Under more pressure, Cosentino was picked off by Smith at the 50. Smith returned the ball 20 yards and combined with a 10-yard penalty on Hofstra, the Huskies had a first down play at the Pride 20 with 6:16 left.
On the fifth play of the series, Griffin took a handoff up the middle and bulled his way 16 yards for his second touchdown of the day. Kesic's kick gave NU a 28-10 lead with 3:27 remaining in the game.
Hofstra's Ricky Bryant capped the scoring for the day, hauling down a 38-yard touchdown pass from Consentino with 34 seconds left in regulation.
It was a big day for senior tailback Griffin, who had 83 of his 126 yards in the second half.
“I haven’t played a lot of football over the past three years because of injuries and I haven’t seen much time at running back since high school," Griffin said. "I was just trying to be patient with it and let my linemen get in front of me.”
“We have a very young offense, but the great thing is that we have a guy over there playing tailback that has been kind of quiet for the past two years," Coach Brown said. "It was nice to see him get a 126 yards rushing. He gives us great leadership.”
“I am real happy with our football team," Coach Brown continued. "If you look at some of these guys who have been through a lot, now they are smelling it a little bit and playing at a high level.”
Brown was pleased with the way his team reacted to the early 10-0 hole. “I think this morning we were just a little too satisfied with what we had done," Brown said. "But you know what, our character stepped up when we were in trouble and that’s when you really find out the measurement of a football team. It was the first time this year that we had been in major adversity and I am just so happy with the way our guys responded.”
“It was just a great day for Northeastern today," Brown added. "It wasn’t a perfect day, but we had to hold serve at home because we are at Delaware next week. We have some tough road games to deal with so you need to hold serve at home if you are going to give yourself a chance. That is a very good team that we played today. I really think that it is a benchmark game for us because they are that good."
