NU led 10-7 at the half, but the Blue Hens controlled the game after the break. The Huskies came out and had just one first down over their first four series of the second half, while Delaware scored on each of its first four second-half drives to build a 20-10 edge.
The Huskies went three plays and out on their first possession of the third quarter. Delaware started at the Husky 46 after a Tyler Grogan punt and quarterback Andy Hall hit Justin Long on a 23-yard pass to the NU 23-yard line. The Huskies forced a 31-yard field goal by Scott Collins, which tied the game at 10 with 11:44 left in the third quarter.
Grogan punted 22 yards into a stiff wind and Delaware again started with great field position, setting up at the NU 44. But the Huskies stopped the Hens for no gain on three plays. Delaware executed a perfect fake punt on fourth down, however, snapping the ball to Sean Bleiler, who ran 24 yards for a first down at the NU 20. Keith Burnell (81 yards) accounted for the next 19 yards on three carries, setting up a 1-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown by Hall to give Delaware the lead for good. Collins added the extra-point for a 17-10 advantage midway through the third quarter.
"The fake punt, that was a big play," said NU head coach Don Brown. "We had stopped them stopped and we're ready to get the ball back. We were in 'fake.' We were defending the fake. So I'm not real happy about that. But you've got to give credit to Delaware, they made the play."
The Huskies continued to sputter on offense and punted again. Sidney Haugabrook ran it back 32 yards to the NU 40 and three plays later Collins nailed a 37-yard field goal for a 20-10 lead with 4:34 left in the third quarter. The Huskies never treatened again, moving the ball into Delaware territory just twice, with their farthest progress to the Hen 38.
NU's offense started out hot on an 84-degree day. The Huskies used their first drive of the game to move 65 yards in just five plays and went ahead when quarterback Shawn Brady hit William Griffin on a swing pass out of the backfield. Griffin found a gap and sprinted 25 yards for a touchdown and Miro Kesic added the extra point for a 7-0 NU lead with 11:34 left in the first quarter.
The Blue Hens had a great chance to get on the board when NU's Quintin Mitchell mishandled a punt from Ryan Bleiler and the ball rolled into the endzone. Delaware appeared to have control, but Art Smith snuck in for the Huskies and saved six points by recovering the ball for a touchback.
After an NU punt, Delaware took over and moved the ball to the 50 before the Huskies forced a fourth-and-three play. First-year Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler elected to go for it, but QB Hall's pass was incomplete and NU took over at midfield.
NU marched right down the field again using just three plays, capped by a Tim Gale 17-yard run, to set up first-and-goal at the Delaware 10-yard line. Riley ran for eight yards on first down to the 2-yard line, but Frank McDonald was stuffed on second down after a 1-yard gain. Brady tried a bootleg on third down, but the Blue Hens weren't fooled, stopping him for a six-yard loss. Kesic booted a 24-yard field goal to put NU up 10-0 on the first play of the second quarter.
That would be the end of the scoring for the Huskies. After the teams traded punts, Delaware started a drive at its own 12-yard line. The Blue Hens appeared to stall at their own 49 and had a third-and-nine play, but Hall found Corey Howard on a 49-yard play (the longest against the Huskies this year). Smith chased him down at the NU 2-yard line. The Hens were hit with a personal foul to move them back to the 17, but Hall hit Howard on a 12-yard play to the 5 and then connected with Antawn Jenkins for a touchdown pass on third down. Collins added the point-after to cut the NU lead to 10-7.
Delaware continued to hurt its cause late in the second quarter. Hall and the Hens advanced the ball to the NU 5-yard line and called their final timeout of the half with 11 seconds left. Instead of kicking a field goal, Delaware ran another play and Hall tried to run for the score. He was stopped by James Abosi at the 2-yard line and time ran out with the Huskies up 10-7 at intermission.
"I thought we did a decent job of controlling the tempo in the first half, but we got nothing out of our offense in the second half," Coach Brown said. "Delaware did a good job of stopping what we did. They certainly stepped up and played well."
"I thought we came out and played NU-style football, but when you've had to log 50 plays on defense in the first half that will take its toll over a long football game," added Brown. "Too many penalties. Too many drops. Too many three and outs. We couldn't catch our breath on defense."
Liam Ezekiel took advantage of being on the field for so long as he had a monster game for the Huskies, making a career-high 22 tackles.
"Bottom line is we're 4-1 going back to Parsons," Brown said. "We just need to regroup and get ready to play next week." The Huskies return home to meet Rhode Island Oct. 12 at 12 p.m. in a game that will be televised by Fox Sports New England.
