Rhode Island came into the game averaging an A10-best 304.2 rushing yards, but the Huskies (the top rushing defense in the conference) held the Rams to just 83 yards on the ground. NU, meanwhile, had 266 rushing yards, led by William Griffin's 101 yards on 15 carries. It was Griffin's second 100-yard game of the season.
“For us, everything starts with the running game," NU head coach Don Brown said. "If you can run it, which we were able to do today, the play action is there and the lanes opened up. I was happy for Shawn and the way he got things going. It’s the biggest offensive day we have had since I have been here.”
Coach Brown was pleased with his team's defense. “We stepped up today," Brown said. "I told the defense that they would probably have 200-plus yards on the ground, but we just can’t let them get anything in the passing game. And we end up holding them to 83 yards, which I think is unbelievable.”
Brady ran for 41 yards on seven attempts and his 264 yards of total offense were a career-best. Brady is now 9-3 as a starter since taking over midway through last season. The Huskies' 543 yards of total offense were their second-most ever against an A10 team since joining the prestigious conference in 1993. Only a 561-yard effort against William & Mary in 1999 tops Saturday's rout of URI.
Brady, whose previous career high had been two TD passes, threw three in the first half. The last one before intermission was a 6-yard play to freshman Eric Thomas with just two seconds left in the second quarter to give NU a 21-10 edge at the break. It was the first of two TD catches for Thomas, who also caught a 31-yard scoring pass in the third quarter.
URI's Shane Laisle made a 42-yard field goal on the Rams' first drive of the second half to cut into the deficit and make it 21-13. The Rams then stuffed Miro Kesic on a fake field goal attempt and took over at their own 36. They started to move the ball again, but stalled at the NU 43 and had to punt. Griffin started NU's next series with a season-long 35-yard run, and four plays later Brady hit Thomas on a 31-yard TD play for a 28-13 NU edge with 2:58 to go in the third quarter. The Rams never threatened the lead again, failing to advance the ball past their own 37 the rest of the way.
The Huskies got off to a sloppy start, fumbling three times in the first 30 minutes of action, losing two to the Rams. NU also tallied five penalties for 50 yards.
Rhody received the opening kickoff and punted after three plays. NU's Quintin Mitchell fumbled the return and the Huskies dodged their first bullet as Joe Okrah was there to recover the ball. On their first possession, NU also ran just three plays, one of which was negated by a holding call and the other resulting in a fumble by Anthony Riley. Chris Duncan recovered for URI, setting up the Rams at the Husky 45. URI converted on the mistake as quarterback Jayson Davis’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Michael Peterson capped a four-play, 45-yard Rhody drive for a 7-0 lead.
The Huskies responded on their next offensive series as Curtis Guilliam ran back the kickoff 40 yards to the URI 34. Brady took to the air and completed a 10-yard TD pass to Peter Harris, ending a five-play drive and tying the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. It was Harris's first TD of the season.
Both teams exchanged punts before Rhody broke the tie with a 39-yard field goal from Laisle, giving the Rams a 10-7 advantage early in the second quarter. URI then forced the Huskies to punt from their own 27-yard line on NU's next drive. But punter Jonathan Kahn was roughed up by the Ram defense and the visitors were flagged for a 15-yard penalty, giving the Huskies an automatic first down. The URI defense again held, forcing another NU punt attempt. But, at their own 46-yard line, the Huskies faked the kick as Tyler Grogan passed to a wide open Art Smith on the URI sideline for a big gain. Smith beat two defenders and appeared to be on his way into the endzone when URI’s Wendall Williams forced a fumble at the 1-yard line. Rhody recovered in the endzone for the touchback, thwarting another great scoring chance for NU.
The Rams could not capitalize on the momentum, however, as the Huskies continued to keep their option offense quiet. After a Rhody punt, NU struck again as Brady found freshman Cory Parks for a 15-yard touchdown to cap a 10-play 48-yard drive. The score put NU ahead to stay with 2:15 left before the half.
Rhode Island punted to the NU 7-yard line with 1:29 to go in the first half and the Huskies weren't content to go into the locker room with a 14-10 lead. Brady executed a perfect nine-play, 93-yard drive for the Huskies to close out the half. The two keys plays were a pair of 29-yard pass plays to Parks. A 6-yard lob pass to Thomas gave NU its 21-10 halftime edge.
“We were a little shaky in the fist half, kind of shooting ourselves in the foot between turnovers and a couple bad penalties," Coach Don Brown said. "But after the half, we just came out and responded. One thing to point to is our quarterback, who was the guy today.”
“I take all the responsibility for a week ago," Coach Brown said. "I think we got a bit over-confident. It was the first time that we coached without a little bit of fear and we won’t let that happen again, trust me. You've got to have a little fear, you have to be humble and you have to have a little respect. The minute you think that you are there, you are really the farthest away....responding to adversity is how you measure your football team and we got a capital A today, and I really feel good about it. After a sub-par performance last week I think our defense stepped up and so did the offense.”
