It was NU's first-ever win over the Crimson in six series meetings. The Huskies are now 6-1 for the first time since the 1967 team (7-1). Harvard dropped to 3-2. It was the Huskies' final non-conference game of the year.
Harvard got the ball at its own 12-yard line with 2:19 to go and moved the ball into scoring position, highlighted by a pair of fourth-down conversions. The first came from their own 12 on a fourth-and-10 play when Fitzpatrick found Rodney Byrnes for a 13-yard gain. Later on fourth-and-four from the Harvard 31, Fitzpatrick connected with Carl Morris (nine catches, 108 yards) for an 11-yard play and another first down. After a seven-yard pass play, Fitzpatrick and Morris hooked up again for a 23-yard gain, setting up the Crimson at the NU 28 as the clock ran under a minute.
A pass interference call on NU's Art Smith provided another first down and suddenly the Crimson were on the doorstep. Fitzpatrick's seven-yard pass to Kyle Cremarosa set up the dramatic final Harvard play of the day from the NU 7-yard line. Thomas never controlled the option pitch and Anzalone pounced on the loose ball. Three running plays later and the Huskies had their first-ever win over the Crimson.
Morris was tough all day and his 18-yard TD catch from Fitzpatrick gave Harvard a 14-10 edge with 11:14 left in the third quarter. The NU defense began to stifle the Crimson, while the Husky offense started to come alive. After a Harvard punt midway through the third quarter, the Huskies took over at their own 25 and started to move the ball. The momentum came to a halt, however, as Anthony Riley (career-high 124 yards) was hit by Michael Armstrong and fumbled at the Crimson 42. Benny Butler recovered for Harvard, but NU got the ball right back. The snap on Crimson's first play of the ensuing series went over Fitzpatrick's head and Anzalone recovered at the Harvard 24.
Three plays later, Shawn Brady scrambled around, weaving in and out of trouble, before finding freshman Cory Parks for a 20-yard TD pass. Miro Kesic added his 28th straight extra point for a 17-14 NU lead with 14:50 left in the fourth quarter.
The Huskies jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Brady looped a pass to Tim Gale for a 43-yard touchdown with 6:38 left in the first quarter. Kesic added a 38-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter for a 10-0 edge. But Harvard came back. Byrnes ripped off a 41-yard run to the NU 2-yard line, setting up a 1-yard pass from Fitzpatrick to Adam Jenkins to make it 10-7 with 5:03 to go before intermission.
Brady marched the Huskies right down the field again, but the drive stalled at the Crimson 14 with 1:19 left before the half. On a fourth-and-four play, Coach Don Brown elected to go for it instead of having Kesic attempt a 31-yard field goal into a strong and swirling wind. Brady's screen pass to Riley lost three yards and Harvard took over with 1:14 left in the first half.
The Crimson were not content to go into the half with a three-point deficit and advanced the ball all the way to NU 17 on seven plays before calling a timeout with 14 seconds left. After a pair of incomplete passes, Harvard's Anders Blewett missed wide right on a 34-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
It was NU's closest game of the season as none of the team's previous six decisions had been by fewer than 11 points. The Huskies will return to action Oct. 26 for a key Atlantic 10 game at William & Mary.
