The Huskies dropped to 3-2 in A10 play and 6-2 overall, while the Tribe improved to 4-1 in the A10 and 5-2 overall. It was a packed crowd on William & Mary's annual Homecoming.
NU jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal by redshirt freshman Miro Kesic with 6:27 left in the first quarter, but it was all William & Mary after that. After Kesic's field goal, Corley led the Tribe on an efficient seven-play 76-yard drive, capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass to Rich Musinski to give William & Mary the lead for good with 3:43 left in the opening quarter.
Musinski really hurt the Huskies, finishing with six catches for 132 yards, all of them in the first half. Musinski set up the Tribe's second touchdown when he connected with Corley on a 37-yard play to the NU 1-yard line. Anthony Nolen forced Musinski to fumble, but Musinski got it back inches from the endzone.. Corley sneaked it in to complete a 10-play, 80-yard drive for a 13-3 edge with 8:40 to go in the first half. Greg Kuehn's extra point missed.
The Huskies lost starting quarterback Shawn Brady early in the second quarter and Sean Cassidy took over for the rest of the game. Brady entered the game with a tender shoulder and left after the first series of the second quarter. Cassidy and NU put together a 10-play 59-yard drive, highlighted by runs of 16 and 27 yards by William Griffin (19 carries, 93 yards) and finished by Kesic with a 35-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 13-6 with 4:11 to go before intermission.
Corley and Musinski responded quickly, however, after Kesic booted the ensuing kickoff out of bounds and the Tribe started at their own 35. Corley and company needed just six plays and 1:45 of the clock to move the 65 yards. Musinski again proved to be a backbreaker, grabbing a 33-yard TD pass after breaking free in the secondary. Kuehn made the PAT for a 20-6 Tribe advantage at the half. Corley was 13-20 for 195 yards in the first half.
Cassidy and the Huskies started moving the ball on their first possession of the second half. Griffin had four rushes covering 23 yards and Anthony Riley ran once for 22 yards as NU got the ball to the Tribe 25. The drive stalled, though, and Cassidy was sacked by Craig Pengitore for a loss of 10 yards, moving NU out of field goal range and forcing a punt.
The Tribe took over and marched for another score, a five-yard TD run by Jonathan Smith (28 carries, 102 yards) for a comfortable 27-6 lead with 5:41 remaining in the third quarter. Down 30-6 after a 35-yard field goal by Kuehn, the Huskies did manage a touchdown as Cassidy threw his first TD pass as a Husky, a 20-yard play to freshman Cory Parks (6 catches, 58 yards) that completed the scoring with 9:15 left in the game.
NU has now lost all five of its games at Zable Stadium and eight of nine meetings with the Tribe in the series history. The Huskies will return to Virginia next week to meet Richmond.
