"As soon as I hit it I knew it was good," said Kesic, who had the wind at his back. "It felt that good."
"I went to Miro and said 'What do you think?'," NU head coach Don Brown said. "He said 'I hit them from 55 in pregame' and we were looking at 57. It was either that or take the fourth-down shot and try to get a first. He looked at me and said 'I have a chance to hit this,' so we gave him a shot and our prayers were answered. That's about as big a pressure kick as there is. It's one he'll never forget and one his teammates will never forget."
The Huskies entered the fourth quarter up 21-7, but the Spiders rallied and tied the game with 1:03 left on quarterback Stacy Tutt's third 1-yard touchdown run of the day. The Huskies started their final drive at the NU 30-yard line after a 10-yard kick return by Bismark Osei. Sophomore quarterback Shawn Brady then moved the Huskies into position for Kesic's dramatic kick. He completed an 11-yard pass to Eric Thomas and Brady then ran for six yards to the NU 47. A quick pass to Peter Harris netted eight yards and moved the Huskies into Richmond territory. After an incomplete pass, Tim Gale rushed for five yards to the Spider 40 and the Huskies called timeout with 14 seconds left. Brady tried another pass but Gale couldn't reach it, setting the stage for Kesic's kick.
Kesic had missed from 39 yards in the first quarter and had a 46-yard try blocked in the second quarter.
"I just misjudged the first one and the one that was blocked came off too low," Kesic said. "I knew I had the distance to try from 57. I just wanted to relax, keep my head down and swing through the ball."
"We would have liked to have had 10 more yards," Coach Brown said. "But we gave him the shot. It was a great snap from Adam Walter and a great hold from Shawn Brady. I've never been part of one quite like that. It was a dramatic win and just a huge win for our program."
Gale was a force on the ground for the Huskies, running for a career-high 155 yards on 33 carries. He entered the game with only 27 carries and 108 yards all season.
"I wanted to get Timmy running the ball and have a big back going in there," Brown said. "He gave us a great effort and a lot of postive yards."
The Huskies jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on a pair of touchdown passes from Brady to Thomas, a freshman wideout. Gale led NU's first scoring drive, carrying five straight times for 43 yards to set up an 8-yard TD pass from Brady to Thomas that completed the six-play, 51-yard drive. NU made it a two-TD edge on its next series. A pass interference call set up the Huskies at the Richmond 40 and Brady found Thomas for another TD pass on the next play for a 14-0 edge with 3:50 left in the first quarter.
The Spider defense tightened and the game remained 14-0 at halftime.
Gale fumbled on NU's fourth play of the second half and Richmond recovered at the Husky 30. Richmond scored 3:07 later when Tutt sneaked in from the 1-yard line to cut the Husky edge to 14-7.
NU answered two series later after starting with great field possession at the Richmond 37. Gale had 17 yards on the eight-play drive and scored from two yards out to make it 21-7 with 50 seconds left in the third quarter.
Richmond grabbed the momentum on its next possession. A roughing the passer penalty gave the Spiders a first down at their own 42. Kenny Dantzler (82 rushing yards) then ran for eight yards and Tutt busted a 33-yard run to the NU 17. Three plays later, Tutt dived in from the 1-yard line again to make it 21-14 with 14:28 left in the fourth quarter.
Richmond had to punt on its next drive, and return man Patrick Graham let the ball bounce and roll toward him. Officials ruled that it hit Graham's foot and the Spiders' Chris Collier recovered at the NU 23. The Spiders couldn't capitalize, though, as their drive stalled and Doug Kirchner's 38-yard field goal attempt missed.
NU went three plays and out, setting up Richmond for a game-tying drive. The Spiders moved 67 yards in 10 plays, highlighted by a 36-yard pass from Tutt to Boyd Ouden on the first play of the series, and capped by Tutt's 1-yard plunge. Kirchner added the extra point and the game was tied at 21 with 1:03 showing.
Kesic's kick broke the NU record of 52 yards, accomplished twice by Brian Snow, once in 1980 and again in 1981. The Huskies became just the fourth team in NU history to win seven games in a season.
