In all, NU had three rushers eclipse the century mark. The only starter to break the 100-yard barrier was sophomore Anthony Riley, who carried the ball six times for 100 yards in the first quarter. Freshman fullback Shane Hopkins had six carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Also notable were seniors Peter Harris (12 carries, 83 yards, one TD) and Tim Gale (five carries, 53 yards, two TDs).
"It seemed like everything we did came easy," said NU head coach Don Brown. "Everything we wanted to do went right for us and it seemed like everything Stonehill wanted to do went wrong for them. I thought we ran the ball the way we’re capable of running the football."
Brown wasn't surprised by Gyles, who had a great preseason. "He didn’t sneak up on anybody today," Brown said. "He had 3000 yards and 36 touchdowns as a senior in high school. We have a pretty special young player that we’re excited about."
After the first half, Stonehill held a two-minute advantage in time of possession. However, the Huskies led 49-6 with scoring drives of 19 seconds, 45 seconds, 1:02, 1:51, 2:29, 3:36 and 3:57. Gale and Gyles both had two TDs at the half, while Harris, Cory Parks and Marc Thomas each had one, as NU tied the team record for most points in a half with 49.
In the first half, NU outgained the Chieftains 294-44 on the ground. Husky QB Sean Cassidy (starting in place of regular Shawn Brady, who sat out the first half due to a violation of team rules) completed 7-8 passes for 137 yards and two TDs, while Stonehill quarterbacks Kevin Burke and Kevin Degnan combined for 63 yards on 5-19 completions. NU scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions, while the Chieftains didn't score until their final drive of the half, breaking through against the Huskies' second team defense.
But the NU onslaught didn't stop at intermission. Gyles and fellow freshman Hopkins had touchdown runs of 16 and 50 yards, respectively, to put the Huskies up 63-6 with 9:47 remaining in the third quarter. The NU total tied the team record for most points in a game, which was set on Sept. 9, 2000 against next week's opponent Albany. The Huskies broke their team mark for scoring when a wild snap on a Stonehill punt rolled out of the endzone for a safety to put NU up 65-6 with 6:41 left in the third quarter.
The Huskies wasted little time getting on the board. On their fourth play of the game, Cassidy connected with a wide-open Cory Parks for a beautiful 30-yard scoring strike with 11:35 left in the first quarter.
NU's next possession was its most time-consuming of the entire game, covering 54 yards in 10 plays and eating up 3:57 of the clock. The drive was highlighted by a 17-yard completion from Cassidy to Parks on a third-and-13 play from the Stonehill 36. Harris then rambled 15 yards to set up his two-yard TD run.
The next Husky drive only took two plays, as Riley jittered like a waterbug, evading would-be Stonehill tacklers and using a crushing, downfield block by Quintin Mitchell for a gain of 45 yards. Gale broke through a couple arm tackles on the next play for a 16-yard TD run and a 21-0 first-quarter lead.
Gale capped a four-play, 56-yard scoring drive on NU's next possession with a 34-yard TD run to make it a comfortable 28-0 lead just 31 seconds into the second quarter. The Huskies continued to pile it on as Thomas was on the receiving end of a 34-yard, Cassidy TD pass to finish a three-play, 44-yard scoring drive for a 35-0 edge with 12:06 left in the first half.
With the large five-TD bulge, and NU threatening to score again, Gyles made his freshman debut. On first and 10 at the Stonehill 15, Gyles raced around the right end, untouched into the endzone.
After Stonehill scored its lone TD of the game, the Huskies took over at their own 40. Gyles took a handoff and headed around the left end, then cut back across the field, utilizing some key blocks for a 38-yard run. Two plays later, Gyles used his blazing speed again to outrace Chieftain defenders for a 16-yard score. Miro Kesic's seventh straight conversion of the game gave NU a 49-6 lead at the break, matching the school record points in a half, which was also set in the 2000 Albany game.
With its 745 total yards, NU shattered its previous game record of 600 yards against AIC on Sept. 4, 1999. The Huskies' 593 yards on the ground broke the old NU high of 501 set versus Central Connecticut on Sept. 24, 1988. Gyles tied the NU mark for most TDs by a freshman set by Gary Benoit on Oct. 16, 1982.
Coach Brown was pleased with his team's effort. "Our guys continued to execute on both sides of the ball for 60 minutes," Brown said. "We were very ready to play and there was no looking past anybody and we played that way."
Added linebacker Liam Ezekiel, who was in on two sacks and had four tackles in an abbreviated afternoon of playing time: "Our coaching staff wouldn’t let us look past anybody. We prepared, we worked hard and played well. We got all the breaks today and that’s what happens when you're prepared."
