The win was just the second in 11 meetings between the two teams for Northeastern (6-4 Atlantic 10, 4-3 overall).
With 9:32 remaining in the game, junior quarterback Shawn Brady (13-27, 198 yards, two TDs) hit a diving Parks in the end zone for a 14-yard score to put NU up 21-14. It was Brady’s 32nd career touchdown pass, moving him into sole possession of third place on NU’s all-time list. For Parks, it was his 14th career receiving touchdown, tying him with Bill LaFreniere (1978-81) for third-most in school history.
Sophomore Miro Kesic added a 23-yard field goal with 2:56 left to play, giving the Huskies a 24-14 advantage. Earlier in that drive, senior Tim Gale moved past Brian Vaughan (1993-96) and into second place on NU’s career rushing charts on a 15-yard run with 5:17 left. He finished the game with 119 yards on 21 carries, his third 100-yard day in the last four games. His career rushing total stands at 2518.
Delaware (9-1, 6-1) refused to quit, driving the ball down to the Northeastern 1-yard line with under a minute to play, but the Husky defense held strong. On their four plays from that spot, the Blue Hens spiked the ball twice, got stuffed on a run and Andy Hall wildly overthrew an open Jesse O'Neill for an incomplete pass on fourth down. NU then needed just one play to run out the final 18 seconds.
Just over a minute into the fourth quarter, Delaware tied the score at 14-14 on Germaine Bennett’s 10-yard touchdown run, the 10th play in a 60-yard drive. Parks (four catches, 49 yards) capped a nine-play, 70-yard march with a four-yard score to put NU up 14-7 with 6:19 to go in the third.
The Blue Hens took the opening kickoff of the second half and went 74 yards in eight plays, tying the game at 7-7 on Hall’s 37-yard touchdown pass to Joe Bleymeier. Gale provided the only scoring of the first half with a one-yard touchdown run with 2:39 left in the second quarter. That rush increased his school-record career rushing touchdown total to 34, and also extended NU’s consecutive games streak of having at least one rushing TD to 15.
Both kickers had their troubles in the first half. Miro Kesic’s 32-yard field goal try four minutes into the second quarter was wide left, while Delaware’s Brad Shushman missed a 25-yard field goal with 42 seconds left in the half.
Mike Hall led the NU defense with 12 tackles, nine of them unassisted. Fellow linebacker Liam Ezekiel had another strong afternoon, making 11 stops. End James Abosi had seven tackles and was credited with 2.5 sacks.
Northeastern looks to continue its winning ways Saturday, Nov. 15, when it hosts Richmond at 12:30 p.m.
