Northeastern (No. 22 ESPN/USA Today, No. 23 Sports Network) sent its seniors off from Parsons Field in style Saturday, annihilating Richmond, 45-0, on Senior Day in front of 3535 fans at a windy Parsons Field. Fittingly, senior Tim Gale had a monster game, rushing for a season-high 202 yards.
The win extends the Huskies’ regular season home winning streak to 15 games. The 45-point margin of victory is Northeastern’s largest ever in an Atlantic 10 game, breaking the mark of 34 set earlier this year in a 48-14 win over William & Mary. It is the Huskies’ first shutout since a 7-0 whitewash of Richmond on Oct. 20, 2001. That is the only other time NU has kept an A10 opponent off the scoreboard.
Northeastern (7-4 overall, 5-3 A10) scored early and often. Two minutes into the game, Gale took the handoff, ran around the left side and went all the way, scoring from 53 yards out to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead. The rush was the longest of Gale’s career. It also pushed his school-record rushing touchdown total to 35 and moved him into a tie with Brandon Hanes (1994-97) for second on NU’s all-time scoring list with 224 points. His 202 yards is the ninth-best rushing total in school history.
The Spiders (2-8, 1-7) fumbled the ensuing kickoff and junior Mike Hall recovered it for Northeastern. Two plays later, senior Peter Harris found the end zone on a 17-yard run to put NU up 14-0. Harris rushed for 116 yards on the day, giving NU two 100-yard rushers for the first time since Harris and sophomore Anthony Riley did it Sept. 13 against Rhode Island.
Spiders quarterback Stacy Tutt coughed up the ball on a draw play on Richmond’s next drive and sophomore Gene Rich pounced on it. The Huskies took the ball 57 yards in seven plays, culminating in a five-yard touchdown pass from junior Shawn Brady to junior Quintin Mitchell.
Sophomore Miro Kesic proved he loves kicking against the Spiders, nailing a 52-yard field goal at the 13:19 mark of the second. It was Kesic’s 22nd career field goal, tying him with Joe Connolly (1997-00) and Geoff Hart (1981-84) for third on the Huskies’ career list. Last season he booted a school-record and Atlantic-10-record 57-yarder at Richmond in the final seconds to give Northeastern a 24-21 win. The 52-yarder is tied for the second-longest field goal in NU history; Brian Snow hit one from 52 yards out Oct. 17, 1981 versus AIC.
Brady tossed his second touchdown pass of the day, this one a 15-yarder to sophomore Cory Parks with 5:21 left in the half. It was Parks’ 15th TD catch of his career, moving him into sole possession of third place on NU’s list. Kesic made the extra point, his 47th in a row, breaking his own record of 46 straight set last season
The Huskies picked up right where they left off on their first drive of the second half, moving 94 yards in four plays. With the ball at the Richmond eight, Brady ran a beautiful naked bootleg and went into the end zone untouched, putting NU up 38-0. The big play of the series was Gale’s 49-yard rumble along the sideline from his own three.
Parks caught his second touchdown pass of the game, a 26-yarder, with 38 seconds left in the third to increase NU’s bulge to 45-0. It was his 11th receiving score of the season, the second most in school history. Dave Klemic (1997-00) holds the season record with 15.
The Huskies gained 509 yards on the day, giving them 4773 this season, breaking the school record of 4407 set in 1997.
The defense was stellar in the record-setting shutout. Liam Ezekiel maded 13 tackles (nine solo), while senior Anthony Nolen was all over the field with 10 stops (nine solo), including a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Northeastern wraps up the regular season next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at James Madison.
